How my first internship in a big bank turned out. Help?

Fellas, so last week I got a non-paying internship at Citi Bank in the corporate banking division. I was in the credit analysis area. I got in thanks to my brother's friend that works in the same area as a junior associate. 3 otherinterns along with myself started this very Monday.

Here's the thing: at first I was told that I was going to be pretty much filling up client's basic data into the system (supplier's list, client's references, management structure, industry outlook... pretty much macro analysis) and afterwards I would send that information to the financial analysis department so now they would do the important financial data analysis.

Monday, tuesday and wednesday I hadn't had my computer yet so I could not access the system. In the mean while my boss to keep me busy, gave me a list of the non-renewable line of credits that were 90 days close to again be send to the board to decide if they would had their credit line renewed or not, depending on their performance. (Job that the banker assigned to the client would lastly do) What I would normally do is start with a different company, go up to the banker (because I do not have a computer) and ask if they could print me out the financial statements of that certain company. The bankers in corporate banking are always busy so they would take up to 3 hours to give me the papers (in thismeantime I do nothing, which really irritates me because I am a very active person) .

After I get them I would quickly look at them, check basic things like if the operating profit would cover the financial expenses, check how many percentage of their working capital was financed by accounts receivable, how many by banks and how many by their own resources. I just told my boss what I thought and that's it.... I feel like this is only for my learning process.. because I am still in university... i learn this things in my university, so this is nothing new to me.

30 minutes before leaving for lunch in Thursday my boss called me and told me that he got a word from Human Resources, heads up! Citi bank stopped its internship recruiting and that myself along with the other 3 interns were some sort of a special occasion, we would still be interns but they were not going to give us computers to work... no access to the internal data of the bank, which I was disappointed because without a computer I wasn't going to do the capture and macro analysis data related stuff.

And my boss told me that if I was okay with that, he also said that he had in mind that if I was okay with working in the same process... (personally asking the bankers to hand me out the financial statements just to analyse them for my personal learning curve).... so it's friday and I am sitting in my office thinking about telling my boss that I am displeased with my duties. These just aren't the things I would thought I'd do... Am I overrecting? I am not planning on leaving, I just want to tell him the truth, how I feel... bored, trapped, with nothing to do, and this companies list thing bores me to death... has anyone had an internship like this? what did you guys do? help! i'm very uncomfortable. I don't want to burn any bridges and leave with a bad impression because this is my first week... I don't know what to do.

OP - how much Adderall are you (or should you be) on?

Anyhow, don't complain to your boss. Ask for work/things to do. If you get it, then great. If not, study something or do something else.

  1. You need paragraphs

  2. You got the internship through a connection (i.e. an informal process). It sounds like you aren't a "real" intern, you can moan if you want--but they're doing you a favor by having you there.

  3. It has been a week, relax

Not that it matters that much, but what year are you in college? If you're at most a rising junior, it's fine. Also, consider your alternatives; it'll be difficult to get another summer internship at this point that isn't informal hiring as well.

Indeed I am Junior. Thanks for the advise. I decided to quit the internship and pursue a career in Nike in the Market & Demand Planning Department. Much more interesting than giving loans to companies in boring corporate banking, I'm hoping to gain more analytical abilities on market research and then maybe pursue a career in M&A which is my ultimate job goal. Regards
