Public Sector and Infrastructure group at GS
I read a few of the forums on this group and developed a pretty pessimistic view. Is it really that bad? Anyone who can give fairly accurate and objective information on the group's exit opps, description of duties as a SA, and pay grade please comment. Furthermore, anyone know the likelihood of transitioning into a FT role on the corporate side after completing the summer internship?
Have a cousin doing Public Finance Full time at a MM regional bank (WB/Baird/Piper/STHR). Seems very niche, may consider exits in Debt/Credit firms? Modeling is not the same as traditional IB. Pay base is same to that of traditional IB within the same firm, think bonus is considerably less. Check out Mergers and Inquisitions "Public Finance Investment Banking Analyst."
It's their PubFin group. It's in their investment banking division. GS has a really good internal mobility program, so crush it in the summer and you'll have a good chance on moving into a different group, if there're spots available in that group.
Exits opps are limited since it's Pubfin and pay grade is the same as analysts in IBD
A few of my good friends have worked for GS/MS/JPM within the pubfin group. Definitely very niche, modeling is centered around bond math and bond markets since your clients are issuing debt and they use a program (DBC) that does a lot of the work. Base pay is the same, but I think the bonus is less too as previously stated since you primarily compete on cost so you get lower fees. Exit opps if you stay in the group are definitely limited but could be to a muni bond fund or somewhere in public policy, but my friends have either stayed or attempted to exit to more traditional IBD to then get access to more traditional exit opps since it is such a niche space.
How to break into public sector IBD (i.e. GS's Public Sector and Infrastructure Group) at the associate level? (Originally Posted: 03/12/2016)
A bit on my background: 2 years public sector consulting, 1 year nonprofit, pursuing an MPA or MPP (with a concentration in public finance) at Princeton or HKS in the fall.
I've had extensive experience with the public sector through my work experience, and my grad program will hone my financial analysis skills. Does anyone know what I can do to maximize my chances of landing a summer associate internship once I begin my degree. Is an MBA a more viable option?
I'm also looking to break in to the public sector consulting space. I keep hearing that an MPA OR MPP from the HKS or Princeton will get you there.

Hi sorry about the erroneous double comments here, but I've been jumping around forums lately.
If you're looking at public sector work in IB/PE then an MBA is the way to go. The only alternative I hear is an MSRE from a top program like Cornell's.
Again, sorry about the double posts.
Goldman Public Sector and Infrastructure IBD Superday (Originally Posted: 10/04/2017)
I have a super day this Friday at the SF office and I wanted to know what kind of questions they'd ask.
I've heard it's less technical and mainly deals with munis but any advice from someone in the division or someone who has been through a super day for a similar group would be really appreciated.
Hey CarryTheInterest, I swear if I had a silver banana for every lonely thread I posted too I'd be richer than @compbanker ...
More suggestions...
I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
PSI at GS exit opps to Corp Fin at other banks(BB and Boutiques) (Originally Posted: 10/25/2010)
Hey everyone,
I was wondering what the exit opps are these days from PSI(Public Sector and Infrastructure) at GS. I would likely be specializing in the infrastructure part of the group. I want to eventually do M&A and then move to PE. Any insight is appreciated. Oh, and I'm totally open to going boutique to get to where I want to be. Although I would really like to avoid MBA if possible...
Thanks!
would like to know about this on a summer analyst level
me too please
Does anyone have any insight into their hirevue process? (like what questions they generally ask) Any help would be appreciated!
What office? I may be able to help
