I'm currently on vacation in India, but am in the process of sending out waves of cold e-mails mainly to SF Offices with the intent of securing 2018 SA. After sending out the first few, it just hit me that these potential contacts might want to talk sometime in California afternoon, which is in the middle of the night for me. To avoid looking rude by asking to reschedule to a specific time in the morning or evening, should I just wait until I get back home to SF to send these cold e-mails? My concern with that is that I'm not back until mid-August which is a while and might put me behind the curve for SA recruiting.
What do you monkeys think, send emails now with the time restriction or wait until I get back home to the states and be flexible with time?
Let them know what times work best for you, but you may just need to suck it up and just do it in the middle of the night if that's their only availability. Waiting till mid-August would be risky
This. Also, in case it's not obvious, in suggesting times, suggest reasonable times from the US perspective (i.e. between 9am and 7 or 8pm SF time). No banker is going to come in early to talk to you and they likely won't want to be doing it at 11pm either....yes analysts work late but at that point in the night they'll be focused on getting home....you do not want to be the call preventing that. Suggesting anything outside what you would normally offer signals a lack of understanding on these points.
Thank you for the reply! I didn't mean do it at sometime like 11PM for them, I meant should I wait until I get home so I can accommodate any time, or suck it up and do anytime. I chose the latter and made calls really early, and it worked! thanks agian.
That makes sense, I made a call and it worked good. However vacation distracted, so I couldn't do as much networking as intended while on vacation. I do have a pre-existing network and this is only for boutique SAs, but I guess I still have to hustle hard now. Thanks again!
Schedule based on their schedule and suck it up when you wake up at 3am your time for a call that they've decided to reschedule at 2:55am to 2 weeks later at 4 in the morning.
All jokes aside – yes, you're already late, and you don't wait even further. You want to network, not miss an opportunity.

I know the topic of networking and cold calling/emailing for jobs has been covered a lot, but my situation is a little unique and I was hoping to get some suggestions/advice. I'm currently studying/interning abroad until August. My goal is to get an internship for the fall at a boutique/PE/HF/AM or any other worthwhile company that will hire me. However, I will be overseas until around the time i'd like to start or at least interview. How should I approach this?
I plan on sending out e-mails first and then I can follow-up with phone calls (via Skype), but I can't make face-to-face meetings and it seems unlikely that anyone would set up an informational interview on skype. Do I have any chance of scheduling a skype interview or will I have to wait to interview in September?
Any help/suggestions/advice that you can give me on how I can work around this to secure an internship position for the fall is appreciated. Also, I graduate in Dec. 2012, so could I use this as a FT job search as well by keeping it open-ended? Maybe turn an internship into FT?

@californiaanalyst well, my program isnt exactly study abroad. i've been doing business classes towards my international business degree in a foreign language for the past 7 months and will be interning for the next 5 months at a boutique IB here (working in english and foreign language). I consider it an interesting story/talking point for interviews, while not just dicking around and partying constantly like typical study abroads (although I find time to fit that in of course).
so that being said... any other advice?
ok. since dicking around is not your only activity oversea, i think you have time to find a job in fall after you come back in august. some ppl are cool with skype but some are not. you might reach out even more ppl to have some real conversations. and keep applying even though you are oversea

Does anyone have any experience with this... networking with people/alumni who are overseas?
I go to a target, but seem to have trouble locating people overseas (non-europe)... how should I go about doing this.. I have already tried linkedin and have come up with very unsubstantial results.
For big, well-known firms who usually have a standardized recruiting process here in the states, is it the same for their locations overseas... particularly in the middle east, where a lot is still left to be explored? Or can someone bypass the OCR/formal stuff and try to get through networking/relationships?

Overseas, especially Middle East is all networking. Especially for internships, if your dad knows someone, you are good.
Okay thanks the question is how do I go about networking? I've found it extremely difficult finding legitimate companies and alumni overseas. Is going through an alumni database (which I'm not sure as an undergraduate I can just get a hold of it) the only way?

It would be absurd and inappropriate to request “time to speak,” right? Our time zones are close, but I figure the call would cost a TON. So do I just email this guy and ask if it’s ok to ask advice (vs. the typical request to speak)?
Another problem is that he’s been out of the US for over 10yrs, and I’m not sure if things worked the same in banking in the mid-late 90s, especially regarding recruiting.

I have done this several times and as long as you have a connection to the person (not a complete cold call), the person in the foreign country has always offered to call me. You have to remember, these guys have their phones paid by the banks so they don't have to pay a dime.
He won't even think twice about the fact your calling from a different country. If anything, he'd be more likely to talk to you since he knows your calling from another country

It seems like people do get into London or New York office from other parts of the world, and I'm wondering, how they have done it, as networking for them must have been much harder.

I am currently interning in an Asian country and I just came across an (old) article about an elite boutique expanding their business in the country. I was hoping to get in touch with some employees at that company to learn more about its culture. I will return to US this Friday. Would it be too late for me to reach them out? Should I consider network over the phone after I return to US. I am afraid that they might agree to meet in person but I would have left the country by the time they reply and not showing up in person may leave a bad image to them.
