I know I can't get into IB with this resume, so what kind of jobs can it get me that can lead to IB later?
Here is my resume: http://www.razume.com/documents/18179
I'm resigned that at this point., there is no way I can break into IB straight out of college.
So with that said, given the quality of my resume, what should be my strategy, and what kind of jobs should I be applying for right now so that I have a shot a few years down the line to go to a good B school or get a Finance Msc, and break into IB at the associate level?
About the only good thing about my resume is National Merit and high standardized test scores. Are there any companies or jobs in particular that anyone here knows of that may give me particular bonus points for that, or is it nigh on irrelevant?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, I also have a math minor, I was redoing my resume yesterday and forgot to include it.
Just out of curiosity, are you actually earning two degrees (B.S and B.A) or are you doing one degree with multiple majors?
Sent you a PM
I am earning two separate degrees, plus the math minor. I've also had to work 40+ hours a week on average during my time in college, I'm going to include that in the resume as well, the one I posted is just something I quickly put together yesterday.
1) Include your cumulative GPA, even if it is a 3.2. 2) Why is chief economist under Education/Distinctions? 3) Why do you want to do IBD so bad?
Where else should I put it (chief economist)? I don't want to create a separate section for extracurriculars since that's the only thing I could put under there, assuming I want to keep Research as a separate section.
Also, is it really a good idea to include the cumulative GPA? Right now it's at 3.15, the 3.2 is what it will be at the end of spring semester, god willing. I have heard of people having success omitting the cumulative. As for why I want to do IBD, I'm sure it's for the same reasons as 90%+ of the people on this board.
@wolfpack, thanks, got your PM
BTW, my concern is not that I'm not smart enough for IBD, I actually consider myself plenty smart. I just have to face the reality that due to financial circumstances, ever shifting goals in the early part of my college career, and downright idiocy I am no longer in a position to shoot for IB straight from undergrad. I mean, recruiting for full-time positions is closed anyway so at this point even if I had a 4.0 from Harvard I'd be out of luck. lol.
Fun fact: the median grade at Harvard is an A.
Just saying...
Work on your interests, that's just the start. The fact that you quit before even applying to IB positions speaks for itself. I would recommend healthcare because of the interesting major combination. You could break into healthcare IB if your work experience is good. Best of Luck.
You should try to work in the finance department at a f500 pharma/health care company (Abbot Labs, Lilly, Pfizer) or at a boutique that specializes in the healthcare sector.
If your giving up this early, you will never get into this industry. Investment banking is difficult to get into because it fosters the smartest, most intelligent people in the world. You are wrong because I firmly believe you can get into investment banking with this resume. Then again your attitude is the problem. PM if you want help.
Don't get too carried away, more like investment banking is hard to get into because it has good exit ops and solid pay and the only skills required are the ability to use microsoft office and do 2nd grade math.
It's about drive not intelligence. Persevere.
Enjoy keeping fit and keeping informed? Really? That's kind of an odd thing to put under interests
lol please. You don't need to be among the smartest, most intelligent people in the world to be in IB. You just need to be very well rounded and have an excellent work ethic (which certainly isn't easy, but come on man. get real).
Exec assistant is a great way to go if you think you really can't get in otherwise. I'm an an asst, just got sponsored for my 7 and everyone before me has gone on to get promoted fairly quickly.
3 majors? damn...
Do what you want to do, whether its IB or something else. Work hard at it and, hopefully, in the end it will pay off. You may not be guaranteed to get what you want with hard work, but you're guaranteed not to if you don't try
C'mon, you don't do even 2nd grade math, that's what excel is for..
Maybe for the majority of positions this would be true, but you can definitely still try for MM positions. What's there to lose?
This kid is hopeless based on his attitude alone...
both his attitude and the fact he is Polish are his "major weaknesses" lol. jkjk. dude, u go to uic? i'm also polish and in chicago too. it's quite rare to see polish people going into IB...usually it's kontraktorka or sprzatanie ha. well, ur graduating in may? yea...full time is over
Can't really hate on the OP for being a realist. This seems like one of the situations where it is possible, but he will not get into IB after college almost surely.
Do you guys think I should change my graduation date to Dec 2011 and apply for Summer Analyst positions? Would I have a shot at landing a SA position given my resume?
One more thing: assuming I were to apply for Summer Analyst programs, what are the easiest groups to break into in the BBs? I tried using the search feature but came up empty.
The only time to omit cumulative GPA is when it is SERIOUSLY low... like 1.5 low. Yeah, 3.2 isn't great, but if you omit it, HR/recruiters will automatically assume the worst.
The SA idea is pretty interesting, since SA recruiting is starting right now, and you will have a whole new set of chances at FT come Fall 2011. Don't know about specific groups, but look at MM/boutiques.
I'd definitely say military (if you can get into an officer program) and then you can go to b-school in order to career change over to ib.
STOP SUGGESTING THIS!!! The military should not be treated as a stepping stone to GS...jesus
