I need help with something that'll be a problem in interviews

So, as some of you know, I was going to school at a community college for music, planning on going to a school specifically for audio production after attaining an associates in music (apparently, it's needed). Some failed birth control later and bam! Got a kid. So, obviously, I had to reevaluate things and find a major that would allow me to make good money without taking too much time... did some research, got turned onto finance, and now I'm going for CS while considering a possible double major in finance.

Obviously, I'll be graduating pretty late for people my age. I know I don't have to put anything on my resume about my community college and could probably hide my predicament, but I'm afraid it may come up in an interview seeing as how I've been working since I was 16 and I've heard that some places get really thorough while checking your past jobs. I'm wondering how you guys would go about explaining this... or if I should say something different. I mean, my reason for switching majors isn't bad, but telling your interviewer that you have a kid definitely is...

Just tell your story, but don't say money was the deciding factor in your decision. Make it sound like finance is your new passion. That's how I would play it.

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

I really really think saying that I have a kid would be a horrible move though... and it isn't just about the money, I do find it very interesting.

Ew babies.

Flake dahling I wasn't aware you didn't want babies... I'm afraid we need to rethink this marriage...

I've wondered before what I would do in a less-than-ideal situation like this. I do think CS is a good choice for you. "...it may come up in an interview seeing as how I've been working since I was 16 and I've heard that some places get really thorough while checking your past jobs." You don't have to talk about some shit job you had when you were 16. Leave all that shit off your resume.

"Obviously, I'll be graduating pretty late for people my age." They're not legally allowed to ask your age, so if you look young enough, who knows? Don't put your HS graduation year so it'll be clearer.

"I really really think saying that I have a kid would be a horrible move though" I'm not sure if he was saying you should do that, but I don't think you should say you have a kid.

I'll leave it off of my resume, but don't some places require you to fill out actual job applications? Not related to finance, but my cousin knows a lady who ended up getting a job for google and they looked ten years into her work history... don't know how they could do that though if they can't ask for an age.. hmm

Well, whenever I go to the bar, I'm told that I look like I'm 17. So I guess I have that going for me...

I meant not as much time as a career in music production... that'll take forever to make good $$, especially considering that anybody can buy pro tools nowadays and a lot of people are producing their shit in garages with awesome gear/software without spending too much. I was just looking for a career in something that could get me a decent amount of money without taking 10+ years... so pretty much anything but music, I was just drawn to finance.

on a more serious note, i have a few friends who are older and transferred from cc, some of which are married. Just avoid that topic, and if you get asked, just explain that you got held back due to this new aspiration to do finance. If they keep on asking, which i dont think they will since it's really not as uncommon as u seem to think (the age, not the baby), just say it's personal/family reasons.

Far as background checks go, they dont check the job if you dont list it. It's also done by a separate dept so i dont think u need to worry...
