IB resume - How to fix this?

Hello,

Numerous times I have applied for banking internships and have had someone with less experience and knowledge chosen over me.

I am a young (21) restaurant co-founder and manager and at the same time run an investment group in my business school and sit on the E-Board of a business club.

I have high grades and numerous times have received academic honors.

What exactly is the problem here? Can I do anything to fix this? Should I lie about the restaurant thing and state I am only a manager or supervisor this way they are not concerned with my long-term commitment?

oldmansacks:

I want to do IB because the restaurant is just an investment. My real passion is finance.

Zeropower:

I know this because they are from the same school as me and my connections in the career center have told me from looking at their resumes that they have much less experience than I do.

TopDGO:

They are from the same school as I am and my interview skills are top notch or so I'v heard from professionals who have interviewed me.

I will keep working at this but I wanted to know if I can fix anything.

wikileaks:
None of your experience seems to guarantee you a position at IB. What I've seen guarantees you a position is

4.0 GPA + Real HF/AM/IB experience

Nope

Ditto to what the two posts above me are saying. Just because the people who are getting internships have less experience than you doesn't mean they don't have more relevant experiences. A restaurant job and running investment clubs is by no means an easy access resume when many people head or take part in investment clubs at their schools, in addition to having some relevant experience. Shoot for boutique firms and see if any still need interns.

GJones,

I do not think my interviewing skills are top notch, there is always room for improvement. However after speaking with my interviewers they have told me there is absolutely nothing wrong with my interviewing skills and that is what I said above.

All I am trying to find out is if there is anything I should change on my resume. Everyone who got the internships good luck to them.

Also I did have a financial services internship on my resume.

One question I would like answered is should I downgrade my position from business owner to business manager on my resume?

Take the mysterious and make it understood.

so you spoke with your interviewers?

Did you ask for feedback? If you interviewer said there was nothing wrong with your interview, then they are bullshitting. Even after landing an offers I had some things I needed to improve on.

Also, know one is going to care whether you are a manager/owner of a restaurant They will still have a "WTF?" look on their face when they skim through your resume.

Put whatever financial services exp you had previously back on your resume, you stupid for not leaving that on. You want your resume to be tailored for a position in finance/ib, business owner

Being completely honest, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that your problem is that you're way too cocky and simply coming over as a douchebag to your interviewers. Sorry, but a 3.4 from Baruch doesn't entitle you to a front office banking job. I really don't think GS cares that you started a restaurant, and it sure as hell doesn't make you somehow more qualified than your peers.

  • Kids applying for SAs have way more experience than you. without networking your current experience will get you nowhere.

I am a young (21) restaurant co-founder and manager and at the same time run an investment group in my business school and sit on the E-Board of a business club

  • not really impressive or relevant

I have high grades and numerous times have received academic honors

  • come on man a 3.4 gpa? I'm not saying it's impossible but this is not "high grades" not "academic honors" (in the industry).

  • your resume blows. My 8 year old brother can write better than that. Take it to a professional.

THIS. Please tweak your attitude OP.

‎"Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to become the means by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of other men. Blood, whips and guns or dollars."

There is not one thing on your resume that makes you stand out from anyone else. That, in combination with your sense of entitlement is why you did not get any offers for the summer. My advice: completely redo your resume and maybe get a WSO interview guide. It's not too late to get an off cycle internship and leverage that into better opportunities.

Since you seem to be so confident your resume is top notch, post it here and lets see what in your opinion a real resume should be like.

OP, you are completely missing the point of this exercise. Numerous people are telling you that your resume needs improvement. There are plenty of sample resumes on this forum for you to model yours after. Swallow your pride and take the advice that has been given to you.

Mrman90:

Besides being stereotypical you are absolutely wrong.

I have no such attitude, all I wish to do is improve and I am asking you guys for tips on how to best go about doing that.

I do not believe I am entitled to anything in this world that I have not worked for.

I_Bankster:

You're right, thanks for the advice will do.

Pacman007:

Shut the fuck up, you fucking loser. Let me see what you have done in in life that gives entitlement to call anyone on here a dumbass. Bitch, my income is most likely higher that yours and your parents combined and I haven't even graduated college. But you're right that doesn't make me better, its the way I treat others around me with respect that makes me better than your ignorant ass.
