SA Investment banking to FT Sales & Trading?
Is it possible/ how hard is it to get interviews for full time Sales and Trading after doing a summer in Banking (Middle Market bank)? Coming from non-target, I wanted to (and still want to) get into Sales and Trading, but only managed to get interviews in Banking. I now have accepted a banking offer.
How rare is it to make this jump and is there anything I should be doing to increase my chances (other than continuing networking, and working hard in the hopes of getting a return offer for the Summer position)?
Very possible to do so. A lot of BBs will allow you to interview internally with a different line of business. Your ability to secure this interview is usually dependent on whether or not you are going to receive an offer in your current group, and then it's up to you to make a good impression during the interviews to get the offer.
Obviously there are only a small minority of interns who do this, but if you network as much as possible with S&T desks (not sure how much time you'd really have to do so) then you can only help your chances. Obviously banking interviews are very different from S&T ones, so you have to be prepared.
IBD SA to S&T FT (Originally Posted: 08/23/2011)
I just finished up my summer internship in investment banking and received an offer. I'm very interested in trading however and I'm only applying to S&T jobs for full time positions.
I know its going to be hard given the current environment, but how should I best spin this experience on my resume in order to help get interviews for trading jobs?
Thanks!
I think this would be far easier to do the other way around ... or if you were trying to go to sales. For trading though, you're going to get some very, very technical interviews. If it's within the same firm, you're already rated as an SA so if they like you, HR will help you get in contact with IBD ... but it's a bit of a stretch.
Better idea is apply to prop trading and IB, hedge.
Any advice on how to break into S&T given the banking background?
Feel free to PM me.
it is going to be hard. Plus most BB firms are cutting S&T people right now.
any more advice on how to actually make the switch over?
Is it alright to apply to both S&T and IBD at the same firm? I'm more interested in S&T, but there isn't much hiring going on for full time and don't want to limit my options. Thanks!

SA IBD -> S&T? (Originally Posted: 05/04/2013)
I'm about to do an SA IBD stint, but after reading more into banking, S&T sounds way more interesting to me. I'd also be interested in ending up at a HF.
Is it at all common to go from IBD to S&T (at the same bank)? Obviously there aren't a lot of transferable skills, but if I do well in my IBD internship and request to transfer to S&T could it happen? It's not like I'm trying to transfer from the BO, so I feel like maybe it can be done?
What interests you about S&T? Just curious.
If i was you, I wouldn't try it with the same bank that you are doing your SA IBD stint at. It would make sense to try other places for FT S&T after you have received your return offer (assuming you do) . Remember, its an internship. The sole purpose of an internship is to see whether its the right fit for you. I would say you start trading a personal account or find a fall s&t internship that you could use in your S&T interviews as a way to prove that you are interested in S&T. So no, don't risk it with the same bank unless you are certain that you do not want to return, even if you receive your return offer.
IBD and S&T require totally different skills. If you are really quantitative then go for S&T. Are you at a BB or MM/boutique?
Top MM. S&T hours and work seem better, comp is similar. Fairly confident I'll do well at whatever I try my hand at. I like the advice about the fall S&T internship. Assuming I get an offer in the fall, could I accept and still do the S&T stint and not get the axe?
Friend of mine did an IBD SA stint at HSBC in London, is now about to be FT S&T at MS...
^ did he get an IBD offer and accept at HSBC then transfer?
Nope, got the offer, didn't accept and then transferred. From what he says, he changed his mind halfway through the internship and then just networked a lot with MS guys.
ibd intern -> s&t fulltime? how? (Originally Posted: 09/10/2008)
I am junior applying soon for intern I have contacts in ibd who explicitly told me they could much more help me get a job in their ibd versus s&t. these are top firms.
the problem is I am leaning toward s&t, though unsure.
i will apply for intern in ibd, i am under qualified, the market sucks, so I desperately need their help.
IF i do decide to switch at the end of my internships, how hard would it be and what would be the process to get my top choice of s&t desks. I am thinking to network my ass off. but once I express interest in s&t will they not give me a ibd FT offer? could I switch my internship to s&t after the first few weeks?
worst case scenario is I express interest in s/t and get no offer at all. or I get to s&t but get a really shitty desk or stuck in sales (not bad but not for me). kind of nervous of that.
thanks
how hard would it be to shop an ibd offer too another top bank s/t and get a FT offer at end of summer? I want to go aborad all of senior year rather than stick around for interviews
i did a summer in M&A at a top BB and switched to s&T FT. i also went to a top state school undergrad business program (think mich, ucla, cal, uva, unc).
while the market was better when i did this, i was able to get interviews with every BB on the street for S&T and landed an offer at a top BB for full time. the most important thing is to have a good answer to "why do you want to switch" and be able to demonstrate your passion for the markets. they want to make sure you arent switching just bc of hours or lifestyle and that markets truly are your interest. i was president of a trading club at my university which def helped.
when i summered, i think if you expressed interest in S&T they would get you an interview but you would give up your IBD offer, i wanted to hold onto my offer so i never went down this route.

IBD SA-->Trading FT? (Originally Posted: 02/25/2010)
Hey guys,
I have no background in finance and am summering at a BB IBD (think Citi, CS, Barclays, DB). I chose IBD over trading intitially because alums said that it would give me a more applicable skillset (easier to go from IBD-->trading than vice versa) and that it would have me learn much more about finance in general than I would in trading.
Having said this, I'm concerned that I won't like IBD and that trading fits my skills/abilities better.
Trading seems better because:
1) I'm a D1 athlete, quick thinker, very quantiatively oriented. This seems to fit trading much more than IB.
2) hours are significantly better. I can see myself doing 7-7 way more than 9-1.
3) I don't really envision myself enjoying making long-term deals but I could see myself enjoying trading day in and day out (clear results for each day.)
4) This may seem stupid but I'll put it out there anyway. I play poker pretty seriously, have done well at it (make 80/hr or so doing it) and think there are a lot of similarities between trading and poker (quick decision-making, maximizing expected value, blah blah.)
I turned down a Sales and Trading final round at a top BB because I really like my bank's culture and because of the broad background and skillset that IBD will give me.
My question is: How hard will it be to go from IBD SA-->Sales and Trading FT. I've been told that it's possible to turn a full-time offer at the end of the summer into an interview for trading but have no sense for how likely this would be.
Thoughts on my situation or what I should do?
Thanks a lot
I'm also interested in this - I'm summering in M&A at Citi/DB/CS as sophomore, but I've started to develop an interest in trading. Would it be difficult to use M&A SA experience to sell myself for a S&T SA position next year?
