Private Equity / iBanking in Florida
For those who currently work in the field in Florida, or know much about it, is there a realistic possibility for a Florida State graduate with a semi-decent GPA (3.25) to get a job at a small investment banker PE firm in Florida. I already have private equity internship experience but I was wondering if I should even bother pursuing anything in Florida, seems a lot more competitive. I really prefer to stay in FL though.
Thoughts?
Raymond James would be your best bet, though they only recruit from certain southern schools, and I'm not sure FSU is one of them.
All of the legit Florida PE shops only hire from strong IBs from my experience. Outside of RayJay, it will be tough. There are a few groups in Miami/Tampa that focus on LatAm IB and/or logistics/transportation. Blanking on the names, but google it.
There are some decent boutiques in Miami and Tampa, just do some searching around. Outside of that Baird has a small group in Tampa, along with RJ - which should be your main target. PM me if you have any questions I am familiar with the area.
IB/PE South Florida (Originally Posted: 06/17/2015)
Hey guys,
I'm a rising Junior at Cornell University in the business school studying finance. My freshmen year I worked at Morgan Stanley doing Fixed Income trading. This summer (sophomore year summer) I'm doing the same thing and I've finally realized that trading isn't the best thing for me and I'm not huge on living in NYC either. I like IB more and have given thought to PE as well.
I grew up in South Florida and would love to work there after graduation. Does anyone here know of any PE or IB firms that offer junior year internships in south Florida? Or any PE firms that hire analysts right out of college? I know this is a shot in the dark, but I figured I tried anyways.
Thanks in advance for all your help!!
Unfortunately, none that I know of.
HIG Capital is the biggest player in the space, but I don't know of them having a dedicated intern class. Coming from SoFlo, I'm sure you're well aware that most of the finance industry is concentrated around PWM and HFs. There are some LatAm teams with the BB's based down there, but those are pretty much the only coverage group that you'll find.
Two recommendations.
A. Summer in NYC with one of the BBs. Aside from the LatAm guys, most banks have a Corporate Banking presence in Miami. Having BB IBD experience on your resume will be impressive, and you can easily apply for CB or analyst positions in PE. As in the case with most banks, you can always move from NYC -> "Satellite City" but this equation is not transitive. This way if you decide to do IB/PE in NYC instead of MIA you won't shoot yourself in the foot.
B. Ask some of the PE shops about interning. Most of the smaller guys won't advertise for an intern, but it is possible that they'll take one on for the summer. The downside to this approach is your experience will be no where what you can get at a larger PE/IBD division. Another thing to keep in mind is aside from HIG, most of these PE guys are relatively small, so they'll be looking for more experienced FT hires then what a SA can bring to the table.
Morgan Stanley has an office in Miami as I recall.
if they're anything like my firm, it's not IB. what a lot of these firms will do is have their top PWM branches on their website as locations, but really there might be like one MD who works from home there, no recruiting, nothing like that. for example, there's a small beach town not too far from me with to MD's from our bond desk sitting in a PWM office. they do it because they can, not because there's any other presence there.
OP, if you're really curious, see what firms state on their website that they have offices in Miami/Boca, etc. then just cold call the number online to see if you can get an informational interview with the manager the next time you're home.
If you don't mind working a few hours north, you should give Raymond James a look. They do a traditional 2 year analyst program. Depending on your group placement, you might be able to work out of their St. Petersburg HQ.
Is there any Real Time I-Banks in South Florida? (Originally Posted: 08/23/2007)

Not South Florida - but I think this might be as close as you'll get.
PE in Florida (Originally Posted: 04/10/2014)
All,
I recently accepted my 3rd year, Senior Analyst position with the MM bank that I work at, but am beginning to think about future opportunities for summer 2015. I'm looking to focus geographically in FL for PE, buyout, VC, other buyside investment firms and wanted to see if anyone has seen a consolidated list of firms by state. Also, looking for opportunities with a bit more reasonable work / life balance. (no more 100+ hour weeks! ha!)
I've been using google and the WSO search function to create my own target list, but wanted to check with the broader WSO group as well.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Kind regards, -PsYcHoLoGy
Interested as well. Florida is awesome.
The only big shop I know of in Florida is HIG Capital in Miami. If you have access to Capital IQ you can use that to find others.
HIG is a sweatshop. Going to be hard pressed to find a decent PE gig in Florida outside of that shop.
KLH Capital
I have only heard of HIG. You can take a look at the conflicting opinions in the below thread...

HIG in Miami Sun Capital in Boca Raton
I'd stay away from both though
HIG as others have said is obviously the biggest player there.
Some other names off the top of my head:
Ballast Point Ventures Stonehenge Growth Capital Trivest Palm Beach Capital HealthEdge Comvest Capital South Blue Sea
