Recognition of IE Business School at Top IB's?

Hi everyone,

I need some help. I have to decide within 48 hours whether to start next week in Madrid at IE Business School in the Master in Advanced Finance programme. I have also been awarded a large scholarship (18000 Euros) so I need only to pay half the tuition fees.

HOWEVER(!!) I have also applied at LSE, HEC and Warwick and think I might have chances:

Top 3% Ranking
Comprehensive Work Experience in Finance
680 GMAT (Q47 V35)
117 TOEFL
GPA 1.3 (German System where 1.0 is the best and 6.0 the worst)

Career Goal: Investment Banking at Goldman, JP Morgan or Morgan Stanley.

I am really completly lost because if I accept IE my chances for LSE, Warwick and HEC will be gone...

Any opinions? Thank you!!

I thought IE had greater brand recognition than the others you listed in Europe. It should get decent recognition from banks in Europe. Congrats on the scholarship and enjoy the siestas!

IE is a solid school. But you're shooting quite high going for Goldman, JP Morgan or MS. Those are tough even if you're at INSEAD or LBS... but of course it doesn't depend on your school, it depends on how good you are, how well you network, and how well you perform in interviews. You should check if there are a good amount of alumni from IE at those banks and in what cities... this is quite helpful in terms of getting an interview.

What a fellow b-school classmate did was attend the first few weeks of class at one programme and once he got accepted into his top choice moved over to that programme (they started at different dates)... so he kept his applications for the other schools open. Big hassle I know, but he did it.

While they do have a campus in NYC, I don't think that they have any reputation in NYC. I only know of one guy who went there for his MBA and he was a US citizen and started a Search Fund after getting his degree. Not much of a data point, I'm afraid.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

I did the IE / Brown EMBA program. My perception is that people who know MBAs well, know IE from its high rankings. Recruiters at McKinsey, for example, know IE.

In the US, those who are less familiar with MBA rankings might not know IE, but they do know Brown.

its a good school no doubt. ofcourse if you dont understand the spanish mentality you might have it a bit difficult in the beginning. I know a guy who did his MBA there way back in the days and he is doing great, though mostly stayed in Spain for the long term.

Guess in conjunction with Brown you will get a good angle from english and spanish input.

and much like ESADE probably more focus on consulting, but nonetheless banking recruitment from all major banks.

same holds possibly true for IESE

EDHEC is pretty great if you want to stay in Europe. Placement all over the industry and different geographies. I wouldn't even consider IE for Finance. They have no solid reputation in this area. It's def. not worth it. The MBA of IE is legit, but for the M.Sc. I'd give EDHEC a shot. Another advantage of EDHEC is that you're able to spend some time abroad/do a double degree program/or do an internship. Great for your personal experience if you would get the opportunity to study in two countries. Anyways, let's face it, I'm not sure how great the brand value of both of them is in the US. I guess nobody really knows one of them if the person is not European - ignorance galore ;)

It would be the Nice campus? Nice place to live and study. Girls, girls, girls ...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts...EDHEC would be the Nice campus.

It is kind of difficult to justify the fact that IE's Master in Finance is 33K euros while EDHEC's is 19,000. I wonder why they charge so much, and how they can be ranked better than Oxford for their Master In Finance.

EDHEC is not on the FT rankings because their program is younger than 3 years, however I doubt that they will have a better placement than IE next year...

You say EDHEC is pretty great for Europe, but how is it compared to programs like Warwick, Imperial or LSE? ...do you think the brand name is as strong?

I made the mistake to give them my e-mail (asked them a question via e-mail).

Since then, they have been harassing me with e-mails inviting me to pay 30k for their msc in finance.

Don't get suckered bro.

Here is some more information. I recently got an MBA from IE, though the help is general but it applies to all programs.

The school is good, the professors, courses, materials - no concerns. There are ample opportunities during the study, I personally did a project work at Wharton Business School during the elective term. For Masters in Finance I know there are meaningful case competitions where you can move yourself to the spotlight depending on performance.

With regards to the jobs, it is pretty much help yourself. The careers center is non-existent.

With that being said, the coursework is similar to US schools, but IE is definitely behind with job prospects generated on campus and the brand name.

Hope it helps!
