In a World of SJW and California Trying to secede from the USA

Hi WSO,

It's a new world we face out there. Can't make any jokes in public places, especially Universities with the risk of being labelled insensitive (which I think is soft as baby sh**). What are people's thoughts on the "Millennials in the workplace" video going viral right now.

I actually agree with many of his points and being that majority of people on this site are Type A and very focused on their careers, what is the best way to solve this complacency and fix the "i need free food and beanbags in the office or i wont work there"

The video to which i am referring is a video by the author Simon Sinek, worth a listen on Youtube

Thanks,

New to WSO

1) The title sucks 2) Link the video -

3) Great topic.

I watched the video and it was wonderfully on point. I am right before this Millennial generation which was lucky for me as I reached maturity without all the crazy technology we now have. That being said, this special snowflake syndrome is not for all millennials. It is for middle to upper class, white millennials. Anyone who had to actually work through their education or anyone who experienced real struggle growing up doesn't suffer from this trash.

I personally think this issue will compound and grow worse. Technology isn't getting any less invasive and instant gratification is only going to get worse. So the opportunity is for anyone who can develop relationships, who can be young and act like an adult in a corporate setting and anyone who has kids and can learn from these failed "special snowflake" parenting styles.

My advice - luddite yourself. Get off the dating apps, delete Facebook, work on in person networking and developing relationships, word hard and if you need personal fulfillment, volunteer in person. Work hard to be better or the best and spend your time hanging around older people, not younger people.

I will work on the titles of my posts... reading back, it is pretty bad.

People will only grow close and more addicted to their devices and there needs to be some way to differentiate, and it maybe from personal connections and networking

BobTheBaker I also agree and perpetual whining surrounding our generation exponentially makes the problem worse, however, that does not mean it does not exist. If you pull yourself out of the situation where you work or your motivated friend group you went to school with etc., I see even some of those close to me who are more worried about have 35 vacation days and don't care what they do at work as long as they can leave by 5 or 4:30 so they can explore and go get mimosas at a happy hour.

I dislike that people fully judge our generation as lazy and unmotivated as the people on this site and those I have associated with are not, but its a stigma I am curious to how we are going to escape. Maybe Trump will help lol

BobTheBaker:

So tired of this overdone topic. Whining about whiny millennials has grown louder than actual millennial whining. Ironic.

I think complaining about millenials tackling adulthood is the goto expression of generational angst for Gen Xers (of which I'm one), whose generational angst is mainly a product of (a) baby boomers continuing to hog all the money, assets and power, (b) baby boomers refusing to die and pass intergenerational wealth that would allow Gen Xers to achieve the financial happiness they expected to reach at this point in life and (c) Gen Xers going through mid-life crisis and realising that millenials are now far cooler and valued by the media than Gen X.

Anti-SJW & safe space angst seems to be a different thing. Anti-PC/anti-SJW has been lurking around for decades. I recall the PC/anti-PC debates when I was at university in the mid-1990s. At least the modern versions aren't over-laden to post-modernist analysis and arcane references to Derrida. I think it gets a lot of attention as, once you're out of that undergraduate bubble, it is so laughable. It gets media and political attention, in part, because it's an easy space so full of confected and naive outrage that it makes very sellable headlines.

In terms of the SJW glorification of being a victim - that's a pretty common theme throughout society now. Everyone wants to be the victim. Even Trump's campaign had a large element of "you've been victims, but we're going to make you great again".

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

While I agree that saying x sucks or y sucks is useless, the video brings up real valid issues. Like increases in depression, lack of purpose, failing to make deep relationships. Stuff that hurts careers and personal life.

I do think technology has brought about a lot of hidden problems. It definitely has shortened my attention span. While painting with a broad brush is pointless, it is nice to see people talking about the negative aspects of immediate gratification and social media.
