So I spent time last week calling up a bunch of boutiques in hopes of landing a fall internship.Talked to a few people, but mostly left messages. I get a call back yesterday from a partner at one of the boutiques, asking to speak today. I do a little research and, in addition, to being a partner I see that he has a history of doing his own entrepreneurial work. So we talk today, we talk about myself, the firm, etc. and he asks if I have a Latin American background (he took a guess from my name), I said I did and that I spoke Portuguese and Spanish fluently. He tells me how him and a few of his investor friends are looking to open up a company in Lat Am (I'll spare the specifics) and asked if I'd be interested in that.
Basically, I want to get some monkeys' opinions on what you think I should do. Now I went into this hoping for a banking internship, but I'd be lying if I said this other idea doesn't sound pretty interesting. I'm meeting with the guy in person soon so I should probably have a definitive route in mind. Any suggestions (questions I should ask him, etc.) would be really appreciated.

Sounds really cool. LATAM projects have a lot of Energy (hydro specifically), infrastructure, and real estate sector deals that need funding and strategic partners. If you speak either Portuguese or Spanish legitimately fluently, you will add a lot of value to the company as an analyst or whatever you do for them. I would consider working with them if I were you, as honing your multi-lingual skills and applying them will make you money and be a good investment in your future. Good luck
It may before your time, but before Miami Vice was a movie, it was a TV show -- you should check it out. They went down to Latin America from time to time and spoke Spanish and dealt with entreprenuers, I don't recall them speaking Portugese though.
You'll probably be in charge of routes going from Bolivia & Peru to Brazil (and vice-versa). Cut deals with the locals in the Amazon for favorable traffic/boat routes. Obtain financing from de-listed Columbian banks. I sense a lot of travel, possibly a villa & a strong sense of entreprenuership in the mix.
In all seriousness mate, what business is the company in & what would the role be? Check up front on the capitalization too.

There was a very good thread yesterday regarding the potential pitfalls of working for a start-up. I would review that thread. That being said, it's always good experience, but you could probably find a more developed LATAM project to work on if that's what you were going for.
I read that thread which is why I started this discussion.
From what I gathered in the call, the company works on shipping new technology from North America to Lat Am. retailers.

I am a little older and maybe looking at this a little different... but I would kick banking to the curb and see how you can get in on this start up.... also maybe some equity.. worse case. you have some great exp.. best case.. you are employee 1 on a cool project
Interesting. Even better if you can immediately work with large accounts (retailers), i.e. Pao de Acucar, Lojas Renner, Lojas Americanas. You'll learn a lot. Keep us posted!
