"Interests" section of a CV
Hey fellow monkeys,
So I'm trying to fix my CV for the upcoming summer internships and I was wondering what I should put in the "interests" section with.
I feel like it's a bullshit section and I have often seen people fill it will all types of randomness like "stock markets", "soccer" and shit like that.
Honestly, I feel like you should only list something you've a true interest in and good knowledge of. However, in my case, this is a bit of an odd interest. I follow, and have been following, the e-sports scene for years and have great knowledge about it, specifically certain games.
My question therefore is; is this a no go? Do I look like an idiot if I list that as an interest of mine? I happen to have no other interest apart from the occasional going out, drinking beer, exercising and stuff like that.
So generic shit or could I list something that I actually have an interest in? My application has a technology discourse and I have sort of nerdy EC's such as programming etc. So it's not like it's an odd fit.
I'm really into esports myself. I played Dota 1 semi competitively long time ago, and still play/watch streams occasionally.
However, i didn't list it during recruiting simply because most people aren't too interested in esports (let alone understand what it is) and its not something that senior bankers would be excited to talk to you about. I don't think it would necessarily be viewed badly in this day and age though.
On the other hand, i follow sports (football/basketball) relatively closely as well, and have had engaging conversations with colleagues/interviewers about sports.
Just my two cents. Maybe if you're applying for Qatalyst though! those guys ran the sell side of twitch to Amazon.
I would save the interests section for things that are easily relatable. I have some needy AF hobbies/interests but wouldn't list them on a resume because I'm not sure most interviewers would get it.
Please, for the love of god, do not list "e-sports" as an interest. It really makes you sound incredibly lame, and almost as lame as the people who list "financial modeling" and shit like that as their interests. (Fantasy) football, middle eastern politics, blogging...you can really list anything that doesn't make it sound like you have no life.
Having seen spreadsheets where interviewers listed "online games - nerd" next to an applicants name, this is a terrible idea.
Did that actually happen?
Put something that you think your interviewer might also participate in. For me (in NYC by LI Sound), having sailed competitively was the line I put on my resume, because some finance people sail (...you never know who interviews you...)
However, if it wasn't something special (i.e."sailed little boats a few times =/= crewed for J/30 national championships), just don't list it. Instead of struggling to make bullshit into something, create an abilities section where you can list--have those e-sports experiences led you to pursue studies in programming/game design/etc? If so, then you can list the end result and use it to tie into your e-sports experiences.
Last, let's be honest: age matters: few 50 yr olds will know/care if you're, say, top 15 in FIFA, while I (mid 20s) would be pretty impressed at your commitment...unless you have a below 3.6 GPA, in which I'll question your time mgmt skills.
Don't. There's still a negative stigma attached to gaming so I'd suggest you just play it safe.

Can I include learning languages as part of my "interests" section? Would it matter if I specified when language?

No. Languages should have a separate section. i.e. Japanese proficiency. etc.

I don't have one. I asked my career advisor and she said I don't come across as boring because i have some experience in sports, video contests, psychology, finance, representing my school abroad on Erasmus + projects etc. Adding "interested in sports, psychology, videos" would be silly because its obvious.
If your CV covers only finance-related stuff, go ahead and add the interest section.

Well, this could have been pretty bad advice. Not having an "interests" section is a major red flag.
A lot of people I know have their eyes scan immediately down to the bottom line to see what your interests are. Nobody's going to read between the lines and divine your interests from the rest of your resume, and even if they did, it would not be harmful whatsoever to duplicate them in a list form at the bottom because that's how human beings read resumes.
If you could post/send me your resume I can see whether it really is that obvious.
