Private Banking vs Investment Banking - Future Opportunities
Hello! I am an undergrad student at a target university studying very relevant major. I was thinking about this topic for a long time, but I am totally lost now. I would be grateful if you can let me know what you think.
There are good opportunities in both fields. You will make more money if you go into investment banking. But if money is not everything for you, it is really your choice. If you like doing banking on a more personal level, then private banking is for you. If you like doing stuff with big companies and big banks, do investment banking. AS you already probably know, you will be working super long hours for the first couple of years in IB.
PB at BB or IB at mass media company (Originally Posted: 03/22/2016)
So I have two offers on the table. One is in JPM's PB Latam team and the other is from a mass media company in their Asset Management and liquidity department.
JPM's PB Latam offer - 85k and the role is more focused on relationship management.
IB offer - 55k and the role is about M&A deals for the company and managing the debt the company has right now. The company was bought in an LBO in 08 and now has $20B of debt. It is a small team of 4 people in which I will have more exposure and more responsibilities.
Offers are in different cities. City A (JPM's offer) is much more expensive than City B (IB Offer) by much. A $55k salary in city B is equivalent to $72k salary in city A. In both cases, I will be able to keep the same lifestyle that I have right now. I currently live in city B.
Which offer would you choose? Why? What exit opportunities will I have?
Doesn't sound like IB, but more like corporate development. The corp dev experience will ultimately be more useful for a career in corporate finance, but the pay gap is large. You should try to negotiate for 65k-75k. If they bite, then it's a very easy choice. You should tell them you have outstanding offers that pay more but you are interested in working for them.
hey, bump to this old post. wondering which you chose in the end as I'm having a similar dilemma..
Private Banking vs Ibanking (Originally Posted: 07/13/2010)
I know 99% of you would say Ibanking, but hear me out:
Position is for an analyst position in the Investment Group of a top private bank (CS/JPM/GS). Basically its a portfolio management group that financial advisors utilize for asset management (like an internal third party manager).
I am obviously interested in exit opps, but I am NOT looking to go into PE. I am either interested in the MBA => Trading route or MBA => Management consulting.
Hours are 60~70 hours for PB versus 100+ for IBD.
Comp is (based on conversations with current analysts) 70K + 20~30K disc. bonus.
Based on the above info, what would you recommend? I am thinking that with the PB route, I can maintain somewhat of a life, study for GMATs, focus on extra curriculars (involved in several charities as of now)...
lives in PB at two of the three firms you listed is a total myth.
only do pb if u can't get into ibanking. also cs does not belong in that list.
I think he meant to type MS :s ?
uhm CS is probably the best out there for private banking...
JPM & CS>>>GS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MS. MS hardly has a private banking operation. They've been trying to leach talent from from those three banks the entire year.
JPM is the best PB hands down. Comp is 65K + 15-25k for bonus for jpm.
Assuming we are talking NYC, the hours at JPM PB are pretty steep. Of course if depends on the group you're in, but IMO once you are talking 80 hours a week, what's another 20 hours?
If you have the choice, I'd bite the bullet, work some more hours, and go with IB. The exit opps are worth it.
Internship advice - Ib vs Pb offer (Originally Posted: 04/02/2015)
Hi,
I currently have two offers for a summer internship. One of them is with a BB investment banking in Bombay and the other one is with a Small PB investment strategy team in Singapore.
Ideally, upon graduation, I would like to do Ib in Singapore.
Currently, I am leaning towards the Ib internship in Bombay.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
PB vs Boutique IB (Originally Posted: 04/21/2011)
Hey guys I'm new here. I'm going to be a senior undergrad next year, but actually am going to push back my graduation so, I'm actually more of a current sophomore then. Wondering what is better if I want to eventually work in I banking? A swiss private bank located outside of the U.S. or a small boutique I bank. When applying for i banks later on, does having experience in private banking look favourable?
