I didn't do it myself (I did consulting for the summer), but most of the people that I know who did it actually ended with an offer. Once you're accepted for an internship, you're pretty close. Do at least a decent job and it shouldn't be a problem. Also, having that experience on your resume is very helpful for interviews with other i-banks, because you know what they do and you can answer their interview questions a lot better.

I-banks will be very skeptical: If another bank gave you a chance and you blew it, why should they repeat the mistake?

As long as you have strong work ethic and you'r reasonably capable dealing with people and managing your time, you shouldn't have a problem. You should realize that this will be a summer in hell, and if you go prepared for it you may be pleasantly surprised. On the positive side, you won't need to or will have a MUCH easier time recruiting. It's worth the effort.

Had a friend who narrowly missed getting a full time offer at a top 10 bank during a summer, and had an extremely difficult time securing full time offers in the fall. He ended up having to trade down to a lower tier bank.
