Investment Banking in Minneapolis
I'm a junior at a semi-target but I am from MN and am looking into opps there. I have searched but there doesn't seem to be a lot of details on the MM banks in Minneapolis (Piper, Laz MM, HL, HW etc.)
Does anyone on WSO work for one of these banks that is willing to do an informational interview maybe or has insights about specific groups, culture, pay etc. Very interested in Piper.
Thanks in advance
PM me.
Thanks for your response lucid. I just made my account so I can't PM you yet unfortunately...
Minneapolis is solid. Major growth area (along with Denver) for MM activity.
Here is our database list
Also very interested
bump. anyone?
If anyone works in IB in Minneapolis, I would love the opportunity to speak with you.
Pursuing IB in Minneapolis Area (Originally Posted: 02/25/2015)
Hello everybody! I'm a sophomore living in Minneapolis and I'm highly interested about getting into the IB field. I go to a non-target school (Carlson-UMN) so I'm looking for a relevant internship/opportunities in a middle-market or boutique firm around the Minneapolis area. My current majors are Finance and MIS.
Along with taking my finance classes, I'm a member of my school's finance club and I am going on a school-sponsored IB "trek" around the area soon. I'm out of ideas on what to do next so my question for you monkeys is what steps should I take? Any advice? Which firms to cold-email?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Piper Jaffray, is a notable solid MM bank is headquartered in Minneapolis. Aside from that I'm sure there are plenty of boutiques. Just get networking.
Piper has tons of people from Carlson. Network!
I think Lazard Middle Market is based there as well?
Carlson sends kids into all of the major MM shops (HL, Lazard, PJC, HW, etc.), plus the boutiques. From my understanding, the MM shops are done with SA recruiting already, so you should focus on the boutiques. There is a list up on the MSP business journal.

Hey monkeys, I'm a sophomore living in Minneapolis highly interested in getting some sort of relevant internship. Been reading other monkeys' success stories and just looking for a little guidance. Already brushing up on technicals (IB by Rosenbaum, Vault guides, ibankingfaq) Financial Modeling seems to be key so I'm also looking into that.
My main question to you is what firms should I start cold-emailing? Private Equity? Wealth Management? Maybe I'm not getting it but I'm just not sure about which firms to contact.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
PM me.
RBC Capital Markets- Minneapolis Branch (Originally Posted: 04/05/2011)
Fellas,
What services do RBC Capital Markets have in their Minneapolis branch? I'm thinking they have fixed income and corporate finance but am unsure if this is true. Any of you guys know?
Not sure about their Minneapolis branch. What they are hiring in Boston and Houston office for Fixed Income.
It is ex Dain Rauscher... Look it up.
It's RBC GAM for the Minneapolis branch, not capital markets. I am interning there this summer with trading and investment services. Minneapolis is all of the FI stuff and Boston has the equity stuff.
Hope this helps.
Minneapolis IB Scene (Originally Posted: 04/21/2008)
I posted something about this on the Piper Jaffray thread, but figure maybe a new topic would yield some more results.
Can anyone comment on the IB scene in Minneapolis? There are quite a few MM banks there (PJ, Laz MM, HW&Co., Stifel, HLHZ, etc). Are there certain industries that are prominent in the twin cities (as energy is in Texas, for example)?
I'd imagine the hours are a little better than NY - is that a safe assumption? Also, are PE opps more limited post-analyst?
Look forward to hearing any input.
the hours in Minneapolis are definitely better than nyc, but it is a strange city in which to work ib hours -people in general tend to go home earlier, so when you get off at 11, downtown will be like a ghost town-
felipz24 - sent you a PM

I know this post is dead but I was wondering what HF/VC/IB firms are in Minneapolis that take undergrads or will at least give you a shot. (internships etc...) I am going to be a junior and looking for something for next summer to try and break into the industry.

What's the deal with the different Minneapolis MM shops?
HL LAZ HW PJ etc...
What do you want to know?
Any questions?
i mean generally... culture, hours, pay, exit ops.
it's hard to get a read on these groups because they're small. also no one has chimed in on them in recent months (years in some cases).
For M&A? RX? Other?
so I don't create a duplicate thread... bump this old post
For RX. I now there are some BSD MDs in the office. Does that pull weight when trying to go over to Distressed PE/HF?
There are two BSD MDs in MPLS Rx from my understanding. Most of my contacts are in the M&A side. Entire office gets to wear whatever they want (posted in another thread about how HL (Rx & M&A) guys show up in flip flops and cargo shorts to happy hours sometimes). Usually at the VP level and up, you are going to dress more properly.
Everyone talks about how solid Rx is at HL, but WIP doesn't have any HL guys that I know of. TPG Credit (now Castlelake) does have 1-2 guys from HL Rx. There is/was a few at EBF (SS/DD fund that is a step down from the previous two).
The key thing you need to remember is that HL Rx is known for creditor consultation/representation. Whereas many other shops will focus on the debtor. So, I'm not sure how many relationships you will develop with the funds themselves. That would be my main concern.
Any Monkeys in Minneapolis this summer (Originally Posted: 05/02/2013)
It would be great to connect and grab some beers this summer. PM me.
I'll be here full-time. Message me and I'd be down.
I'll also be starting FT. Moving up there in late June.
Great to see that some monkeys will be in Mpls. We should have WSO get togethers this summer for sure.
Been up here for 2 years now, send me a message, guys. What will you be doing?
I am from minneapolis and will be in the area on and off but I am not working there. Still down to go to a WSO meetup though!
We should definitely get together for drinks. Anyone know how to start an MPLS group on here?
We should start a group for Minneapolis Bankers. Here is the link: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/group/minneapolis-bankers Feel free to join guys!
It says access denied.
Never thought of Minneapolis for IB, I have some family there. Does anybody know of boutiques looking for unpaid interns?
^I tried looking soph year and didn't have much luck. There are some places (PJ, HW, HLHZ, etc) that hire paid interns if you're a junior but its a little late...
jss09 try Greene Holcomb Fisher. They offered me an unpaid role but I got a paid one somewhere else.
I fixed it. It's open for everyone now. Thanks for letting me know.
I'll be interning in Minne also
I will be near Minneapolis full time.
Great guys. Feel free to join the Minneapolis bankers group here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/group/minneapolis-bankers so we can organize some get togethers this summer.
