Ipad Mini Rumor

"A smaller version of the iPad will be less expensive and offer less storage than Apple's full-sized model, but will have the same resolution, according to a new report.

Citing a previously reliable source, iMore today adds to the handful of existing iPad mini rumors, with something a little different.

The outlet says such a device is very much in the works and will come in around the US$200 to US$250 price range. On the lower end, that's less than half the price of Apple's current entry-level iPad model, and US$150 to US$200 less than the 16GB second-generation model that Apple still sells. That would also overlap with the pricing of Apple's iPod touch line, which starts out at US$199 and tops out at US$399 for the 64GB model."

Not sure if there's any truth to this but personally, I'd be much more inclined to buy an Ipad mini than the regular Ipad. I've been debating getting the new Ipad but the pricepoint for a potential Ipad mini seems much more reasonable for what I'd consider a supplementary device, vs a primary device such as a laptop or cell phone. My main use for it would be basic web browsing, so I don't have to carry a laptop around the house or when traveling.

What do you monkeys think? Is this rumor credible? Would a smaller Ipad make sense for Apple? For current Ipad users, do you get enough use out of it?

Well, when the first Ipad came out I thought it was basically an oversized iphone, but the screen size does have an impact in how it's used.

The ipad mini would be bridging between the iphone and the current ipad in terms of size. The 7in size is what the kindle fire has, so apple would be directly competing against Amazon at that lower pricepoint. For me, it would be useful in that browsing the web or reading for longer periods of time on the small iphone screen gets old, a 7in screen would be much better for this type of stuff.

Wouldn't this cannibalize sales of the iPad? I would imagine that most people choosing between the two would go for the slightly smaller one that's 1/3 the price. Also, at that price point, it can't have the same margin as the regular iPad. Why mess with a good thing? Don't get wrong, I like the idea, but I don't see how it makes sense for Apple. Then again, I know nothing about the industry.

Literal answer: my guess is that they don't have any fresh ideas at the moment. So, just like a movie studio churning out a sequal to juice sales, they are churning out variations of a cash cow. The company is likely to undergoe signifigant changes now that Jobs is gone.

Re: Messing with a good thing.

This expands the market for iProducts. Some people can't afford the plan for an iPhone or the full size iPad. Cutting the price in half could allow some high school kid that cuts grass to save for one of these without blowing 600 bucks.

Just a thought.

They want to squeeze 2048x1536 pixels on a... what? A 7-inch screen? A 5-inch screen? Is it even worth it to have that many pixels in so small a space?
