IR Marketing within S&T - roles, potential career paths. Any help appreciated.

Hi guys,

I've been offered a Marketing (Rates Derivatives) role for a S&T internship at a BB. I love the firm, and I doubt I could join a better one, but I had never considered Marketing as a role. I have tried searching the forums, but couldn't find that much.

I am aware that the desk you spend you summer internship with isn't always the role you end up at when you land the job. However, would someone who has had experience working as a Marketing analyst, or someone who is familiar with the role, be able to offer a few words of wisdom? I have a small understanding of the role, but I am confused as to how exactly the link between the sales and structuring team works, and what the marketing team actually does in constructing a deal beyond communicating between investors and the sales force.

Also, should I find the role not for me, how transferable are the skills gained. I imagine there is scope to move onto a Sales desk, but am I right in thinking 2 years on a Marketing desk means there is not much potential for becoming a trader?

Also, dare I ask, but beyond is there a possibility of working on the buy side after time spent on such a desk, and also how do the potential career paths within a BB differ.

I know it's a lot of questions, so I would appreciate any advice or help.

Cheers
