IR vs Credit vs FX vs High Yield
Hi everybody,
I'm just wondering which desks between (rates, credit, high yield, fx / emerging vs "normal" / swaps vs options vs futures):
- are more exciting (in terms of flow)? and hot (in terms of maths)?
- which one offers better career progression (and maybe exit opportunities?) ?
- which one generates more P&L and bigger bonuses?
- which one is more unlike to be automated in the near future?
I know that all depends of the company you work in, of the location (NYC, London, Hong Kong, Paris...)
Every advice would be appreciated
Thank you

hi whatwhatwhat, i did an intership as a sales on the FX Structured & IR Derivatives desk but I would like to move to trading. Well, I'm interested in derivatives (mostly in options) but don't really care about the underlying asset, just don't want break into an area that probably would be automated in the near future or in an area that generates low P&L. When I was intern, I found that FX was very intensive (even on structured side, not flow) in comparison to IR but even if IR transactions are most of time on a bigger nominal than FX transactions I have no idea which of two is more profitable and offer better opportunities? regarding the other areas (credit, bonds, high yield...) I don't know them but if I have an opportunity to join them, I would like to make the best choice...
Not sure what you mean when you separate credit and high yield.
The only intelligent question is the one about which is least likely to be automated soon. Other than that, stop focusing on what's cool, hip, fun, popular, or happened to pay the most last year. First research te products you listed because I don't think you really know the differences. Then figure out what would work for your personality and work pace. Then ask yourself what you think your long term goals are (moving up in a bank, trading management, hedge funds, mutual funds??). Then determine which ones provide that. You have given NO info on who you are and what you like.
