Is consulting or finance realistic for me?
Several of my friends have told me that they think I would like consulting and that I'd be good at it, but I don't see how I'd be a viable candidate anywhere. I graduated with an Econ degree from HYP but, due to depression related struggles, I ended up with a 2.7 and a very light resume. I'm just trying to get an idea of what my options may be in the business world. Would any consulting job I'm able to get be at such a crappy firm that it wouldn't be worth much? Should I consider attending a good business school in a few years to be out of the question?
My other option is attending a coding bootcamp, becoming a software engineer and eventually working at a startup. It seems like interesting work, and they won't really care about my grades.
I appreciate the help. I apologize if this has been answered previously. The other posts about low GPA were not quite what I was looking for.
You have HYP on your resume. Nothing is out of the realm of possible. Are you still in school or did you graduate? If graduated, what are you doing now? I would start reaching out to firms that interest you, leave your GPA off your resume, and when you get to the point in the process where they ask you your GPA, have a good story but keep it generic (eg temporary medical condition caused me to miss significant classes, etc - don't say it was depression though due to the connotations (rightly or wrongly). Network with your school alumni.
Thanks a lot for the advice.
I graduated in December. Right now I'm just learning to code and applying to coding camps.
You have all the possible resources to succeed. Keep your head up and network like a mad man. Most importantly, appear competent. I wouldn't be surprised if you could land a consulting offer at Accenture. I would kill to be in your position right now. Best of luck.
