Is it ok for me to inflate my salary in hopes of earning more for position I am currently interviewing for? HELP!!
My question is, is it ok to say I make $5k-$7k more than what I make now to better position myself for new job I am interviewing for?
My friends in the past have inflated their salaries to get a higher pay in their next position, and they are encouraging me to do so. I would like to know if I could jeopardize my potential offer OR if this is something that a lot of people do? How many companies actually verify a potential candidates current salary? If HR/ hiring manager does decide to question it, couldn't I just say I am factoring in my end of the year bonus, yearly raise, overtime pay etc.? I feel like those are all valid reasons
how would they find out?
Sorry I am new to this - couldn't they ask your previous employer (HR) for your salary history or are most companies reluctant to give out this kind of information?
At my BB they ask you to fill out a form during the interview stage that states how much you made last year and people that lie do fail the background. I'm sure that most places you could get away with it but it's certainly somewhat of a risk. Certainly not one I would take for 5k.
I know plenty of people who lied at the two BB's I worked for, no one has gotten caught. These people did 10-20k exaggerations, they aren't going to care about 5-7k. They can't find out your salary during a background check anyways, it's illegal. Worst case, they ask for a pay stub, and you say you have a lot of deductions or a high bonus.
some good advice, thanks
Wow it's amazing how some people on this site will play with fire and risk a perfectly good job (and possibly career) over a few grand....
yeah imagine taking on risk for $$$, sounds foreign.
I wouldnt do it but if youre going to don't risk it for $5k. Go big.
It also depends on the size of company. GS or other companies that size have the resources to check. Smaller shops (non mega fund PE shops for instance) usually dont have the staff to check. But do you want to start your new job based on a lie?

There are other ways to negotiate your value than lying about your current salary. For some reason people seem to forget that if you are at the negotiating stage it's because they want you to work for them.

its not legal for them to ask your company how much you make...
never OK to lie about salary, just tell them about "non-monetary" compensation ...they can find out easily, Goldman is especially good at finding out.
I am not sure how your potential employer can find out about your actual salary? It is illegal for your previous employer to disclose personal sensitive information like this, unless they will ask for your payslip from previous employment.....?
Why not? Do it. The worst thing they can end up saying is "X is our final offer." They won't even pull an offer or anything like that.
