Is it ok for me to inflate my salary in hopes of earning more for position I am currently interviewing for? HELP!!

My question is, is it ok to say I make $5k-$7k more than what I make now to better position myself for new job I am interviewing for?

My friends in the past have inflated their salaries to get a higher pay in their next position, and they are encouraging me to do so. I would like to know if I could jeopardize my potential offer OR if this is something that a lot of people do? How many companies actually verify a potential candidates current salary? If HR/ hiring manager does decide to question it, couldn't I just say I am factoring in my end of the year bonus, yearly raise, overtime pay etc.? I feel like those are all valid reasons

I know plenty of people who lied at the two BB's I worked for, no one has gotten caught. These people did 10-20k exaggerations, they aren't going to care about 5-7k. They can't find out your salary during a background check anyways, it's illegal. Worst case, they ask for a pay stub, and you say you have a lot of deductions or a high bonus.

Goldman asks for pay stubs and a W2 when you receive an official offer as an experienced hire. I know it's not commonplace but I can't imagine they are the only ones doing it.

There are other ways to negotiate your value than lying about your current salary. For some reason people seem to forget that if you are at the negotiating stage it's because they want you to work for them.

I am not sure how your potential employer can find out about your actual salary? It is illegal for your previous employer to disclose personal sensitive information like this, unless they will ask for your payslip from previous employment.....?
