Is LeBron the most hated 'best' player ever?

Apologies if you're sick of hearing about LeBron.

But I had a question. I was reading an article somewhere and the writer posed the question.

Has there ever been an athlete/sportsman more hated, who is considered the best, ever?

Besides the obvious, why? I mean, is it OK for us, as a society, to revel so much in someone's failure? What does that say about us?

Apologies for getting all philosophical on this debate but it posed an interesting question and I would love to hear thoughts.

I will be posting about LeBron tomorrow. To answer your question, the answer is NO. Not because he is not the most hated, but because he is not the best. The NBA is a league where you get graded on your playoff (read: Finals) success. In other words, where you compete against the best competition under the highest pressure. This is why I can only roll my eyes, shake my head and walk away when I hear LeBron mentioned in the same sentence as guys like Kobe, Wade and Nowitzki, let alone Jordan, Bird or Magic. What "LeBron hate" says about "us" as a society is that we are getting sick and tired of mass marketed media hype machines telling us that the shit burger we are holding in our hands is really filet mignon.

Freshcut:
Well for starters I really don't think he is any where near the best player ever. But I will say for being a good player (except in the finals) he is pretty much hated by every one.

For the record, I didnt mean the best player ever. I meant the best player currently.

The question largely was, as the best player in his respective sport currently, is he hated more then anyone else in history.

The only ones to come to mind would be boxers. I think Tyson and PBF come to mind. Again not saying they were the best ever but they were the best at one time. Debatable again but you can find an argument for it.

Umm I hope you're joking about best player currently. If you most naturally gifted talent in the NBA ill agree with it.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Lebron is just a world class cocky guy. I somewhat understand how he got this way, from what I understand everyone knew he was going to be an amazing NBA player since he was in middle school, so when people start treating you that way since such a young age, you naturally start getting big headed and think you are better than others.

I have no idea how he has no PR people that can help him out in this regard.

He just needs to watch his mouth and quit being cocky.

Oh and actually performing in crunch time would help too.

For ANYONE saying that Lebron is even close to the best ever, look at this stat: In the final five minutes of games in finals with the score within 5 points:

Dirk 26, LeBron 0

Can anyone even fathom the thought of Kobe, Melo, Rose, Durant, etc. not scoring in the most important time of the most important games? like Midas said, I don't even want to bring up Jordan, Bird, Magic...ridiculous

We've all seen that stat dude...

And Melo...really?

I'd have to disagree. Melo is pretty clutch. I would want him taking a shot before LeBron in the 4th.

"LeBron Hate is a deeper issue that involves race, class, envy and resentment. It has little to do with basketball".

Chris Palmer from ESPN tweeted that.

I dont agree, personally anyway.

Thoughts?

No. It is an issue of people having their own minds and realizing that he is just simply no good under pressure. People are tired of having LeBron forced down their throats as Jordan or Magic, when he's a lot more like Scottie Pippen and Byron Scott in the big game. Those of us who remember the 80's (and earlier) realize that this guy would have gotten his ass handed to him in the first round of the playoffs every year and we do not take him seriously. Now that the younger guys are noticing his deficiencies as well, shit is hitting the fan.

If it is in issue of race, class, envy and resentment answer the following question:

Make a list of players you would want holding the ball with the game on the line in an NBA finals game?

I guarantee you that 99% of your top 50 choices would come from the same racial, social and economic background as LeBron. Save that O.J. the glove don't fit bullshit for the same crowd that eats up the Wall Street vs. Main Street dog shit.

well he obviously is the greatest ball player in the league but he surely can never be the GOAT. i'd have loved it to see him succesful without playing alongside dwade and bosh and so on. think about how we would look at lebron if he won the title in cleveland once. he should have been more patient, like MJ.

Did you miss how successful he was in Cleveland with a bunch of no names? There is only so much one man can do by himself...

no, i certainly didn't miss that but sooner or later he would have won the title there (not just conference title) and he would have created his own goat legacy. Don't get me wrong i deeply acknowledge all the inhuman things lebron did while taking the cavaliers to the finals, it was out of this world but why not stay there a few years and wait for a couple of decent additional players and then make it to the nba title (whicht actually counts then). he would have become immortal.
