Is Manhattan walkable?

I know Manhattan is very walkable, but I have a scenario in mind. I'm flying in Thursday to NYC for an interview Friday. I get at LaGuardia at 4pm. My hotel is in midtown. Assuming it takes an hour to get to my hotel and checked in, I want to do one thing in my short stay, and that's to see the One World Trade Center.

I'd much rather walk than take a taxi/subway. However, it being in the financial district, it's a bit away. Gmaps says walking it's 3.9 miles 1 hr 19 minutes. By the time I got there at 6 it would be dark. Would this trip be worth it? Is it sketchy at all going from the financial district to midtown at dark?

  1. It will be pitch black when you get off the plane (not sure if you understand how the sun works)
  2. You're an idiot if you think you can walk from midtown to FiDi
  3. You must be from Kansas if you think walking in NYC at 6pm is sketchy

Even if were dark, you're in the city... there are fluorescent lights everywhere. As long as you're not going down some sketchy side alley in East Village holding a tourist map (or loitering around in Central Park at night), you'll be fine.

Clearly you haven't been to the East Village since 1975. Or you think the projects on Ave D comprise the "East Village."

Just speaking from personal experience, since I almost got jumped on Avenue C doing the exact same thing I told OP not to do :( Maybe should have specified Alphabet City nearer to LES?

I've had plenty of 3AM drunk walks through Central Park and have yet to run into/witness any trouble. Except the joggers. Wtf kind of person works out at 3AM on the weekend?

Agree with the 3AM walks. Not drunk and not through Central Park though.

It's walkable but gross. The streets are littered with trash, urine, vomit, and manure. Contrast this to the beauty and cleanliness of Chicago's streets.

Seriously, where the fuck do you walk around?

Do you live/hang out exclusively in a men's bathroom at Penn Station? That would the be the only plausible explanation for your idiotic NYC comments.

Financial district near Wall Street, Chinatown, parts of the Lower East, all get pretty grungy. Nothing in comparison to some places in Lat am, Southeast Asia, or Africa though.

NYC blocks are a little different than other city blocks. Personally, I'd just take a taxi. You can take a subway and it should be relatively easy, but if this is your first time in the city you might be a little intimidated. Cab will probably cost you $20 bucks and you can just look out the window. Depending on where you are Midtown you are talking like 20-30 blocks to the trade center. You really don't want to hoof it that far as soon as you get in.
