Is Michigan State good enough for wall street?
Looking towards applying to Ross business school and Eli Broad Business School. If Ross doesn't workout should i apply to different schools out of state Michigan or Would Michigan State be good enough, MSU's business school homepage does show a student who accepted a job at Black-rock so it does seem good enough but looking for opinions as well.
Hold up. You mean for undergrad or MBA?

MSU has such a huge alumni base that you can break into anything with the right networking and on-campus involvement.
Know a guy who went to MSU. There are ~7-10 students (out of 9000 class size) who get jobs in high finance every year from MSU. It is definitely possible, but it definitely requires more work. That said, if you're hungry, networking to get yourself into the interview room builds character. Also, girls are much hotter than Umich... might be worth it.
All else being equal going to a school which is higher ranked is better. That being said, most universities will have specialized organizations and professors which keep up professional networks and help top students place into whatever fields they are interested.
For example, a quick search for "MSU" and "Investment Banking" leads you here: http://finance.broad.msu.edu/fmi/
Which is basically an organization that focuses on helping top students place into high-finance jobs. Although from the looks of it it might be for undergraduate students only and probably isn't a cakewalk to get into.
Nothing is a given, and you will have to work for it.
If this is for an MBA, got to UMich.
personally know a few kids that went to MSU and now work at Barclays. I think that is the only known bank i've seen them at...will be easier to get mm/boutique gigs in the michigan area...maybe chicago through networking but can't say about the rest.
Know kids from MSU. From talking to them, very few kids at the school want, or even know, what IB, etc. are, so you aren't exactly competing against 9,000 as one poster said. However, it is still highly competitive to get into the FMI group. FMI Kids have been successful at getting jobs at pretty much every big bank in both Chicago and NYC. I personally know of people who have gone from MSU to GS, MS, BAML, Barclays, etc.
Do your best to get into Michigan. Michigan economics is better than MSU. If you don't get in, go to the community college near Ann Arbor then transfer. Or apply to schools outside of Michigan.
the quality of career services and faculty is quite different.
I remember MSU broad advertising one of their UG Seniors getting into Wall Street on their Linkedin/Facebook... is that really like that big of a deal?!

Hi guys. I want to know how likely it is that I will be able to break into BB IB.
Also, if I want to ultimately end up at a top 5 MBA program, is being a decent student at a very challenging school like Cornell much better than being a top-notch student in the Honors College at MSU?
-Currently at MSU Honors College -Member of Broad College of Business -Academic Scholars Program -3.85 GPA, with 6 Honors courses
-3 Month internship with MIT based startup company -20 Month job in finance office at dept of Forestry -1st generation college student
Thank you.
Cornell is a "very challenging" school?
It will be very tough as I don't know many guys from MSU that get into BBs. However, I knew a few guys that did work in S&T @ GS in Chicago, so it's not impossible. You just need to utilize your alumni network. There have to be people from MSU at BBs.
Just because they don't recruit doesn't mean it is impossible. It depends on how badly you want it.
MSU's FMI program has pretty good placement: they get quite a few kids into BB/MM IB jobs...
Yup, FMI program has good rankings, one of the members is actually doing an internship at one of the IBs this summer. If it's too late for you to get into FMI, lean on your networking
i know that several people went to Citi not too long ago (2 years?) so it can definitely be done. it's not super competitive for IBD over there, so if you network well you will be in good shape
MSU's FMI program has placed fairly well on the street. I know some FMI scholars at a few BBs, and one guy who's at Apollo for his junior summer. If you're looking to get into BB IBD, joining the FMI program is your single best bet coming from MSU.

MSU street presence? (Originally Posted: 04/09/2013)
I'm looking at Michigan State and Indiana (Kelley) and Michigan State is significantly cheaper (60k over 4 years). Does Anyone have any experience in Michigan State recruiting or it's presence in banking and related fields? I know Indiana is better, but I'm not to pleased to pay an extra 15k a year for what would be a similar college experience with slightly better education.
Is this a joke? You already have a thread on this. Someone should zap this one.

In all seriousness, to the OP

That was mean, but funny as hell.
@Tommy - To save money, why not attend Michigan State and then transfer into U of Michigan.
MSU for Undergrad? (Originally Posted: 09/07/2016)
I've looked over the banks that recruit at MSU, but im curious to know from you guys. Is MSU a good undergrad school for IB recruitment? Plan to apply for UoM and a few other target schools, but I'm accepting there's a more than good chance I won't get accepted, so MSU looks like a good choice overall. Opinions?
Thanks in advance
Forgot to mention, I will be transferring from a state college in FL.
MSU is not an ideal option for IB.
I think they have a banking club, check Google
From what I've seen they do have one of the biggest business frats in the country which includes banking. That definitely caught my interest.
