is there a market for ASIA deals in the US?

At a target school right now, looking to break into IB next year. American born Chinese, lived in Hong Kong for a few years when I was young so I'm fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. Did a studyabroad + internship in Hong Kong for a semester so I also know alot about China and its business environment.

I've got recruiting season coming up. I'm asking if there's a market for an "asia-deal guy" in the US Office? I dont wanna work in HK or China, I wanna work in New York. Will all this asia related stuff matter?

sorry but there are tons of "asia-deal guy"(s) in the business....so probably won't matter, tons of analyst and associates that grew up and are fluent in those languages.

Most "asian" projects are staffed with asia-based bankers with some participation from US SME or from certain groups, i.e. TMT etc.

sorry but i think u guys are missing the OP's point...he's not asking whether there's a generally large asian presence in US ibanking...he's asking whether for asia-related deals, there's is a large headcount in the US for ppl that specialize in that area...the answer is pretty intuitive man....how many cross-border deals involving US & Asian firms are there? not that many...once in a blue moon u get a CNOOC/Unocal type thing going...so no, based on that and my experience, there's not a big market for "asia-deal guys" in US ibanking...in my firm there is a group of asian bankers based in NY that focuses on these deals, but it's not a big group...in fact, i'd say they spend most of their time just connecting the firms asian clients w/ US clients in a business development role...after all, their focus is so wide, they would have to call in industry & product & regional bankers for any actual deal...in addition, within various product & industry groups, there are sometimes ppl specializing in US subsidiaries of asian companies (i.e. Nissan USA, Sony USA, etc)...but it's all just a niche market...

TZL....i assume u're talking about solely asia-based deals when u say "asian projects" and not cross-border deals because in the latter case, it's obvious that asia and US based bankers would be involved...then no, typically there is no participation from US groups...the asia offices for all major banks are pretty much standalone...the US won't get involved unless the asia office is absolutely lacking expertise in a specific area, and that's not often...

heh I assumed there wouldnt be. I was just wondering if any firm would think hey "Nan Lee is also from an ivy and just as competent at US deals as John Smith but Nan Lee also knows his HK and Korea stuff that we could use help on once in a while. Let's give him an interview" that type of thing.

I wasnt particulary asking for a specific position in NY BB only solely to focus on asia.

Sure, they think like that. But you go to an Ivy. Surely, you've noticed the hundreds of fellow Chinese/Koreans gunning for BB jobs and harboring similar ambitions?
