if it fits well, it really doesn't matter which brand, especially as an intern. Just don't wear a backpack with a suit, bad look (Mormon)

Make sure the your wso/">shirt matches with color of your suit and the tie as well. If you can pick up some wso/">suits at a bargain store that look nice and fit well, you will look way better wearing a $100 suit than some dumbass who's wearing a $2000 suit that doesn't fit or is an ugly color.
I am going to have to disagree strongly. Roll into that place like a fucking pymp and let them know who runs shit.
No, obviously don't wear loud colors or tacky, shinny ass $800 shoes. But, if you (or more likely your parents) have the paper around, I'd say go and buy yourself a nice suit from Boss, Canali, etc... nothing flashy, but something nice ($1,000-$1,500). For the first week or so wear pretty basic colors/shoes, but after you've established a rep with those around you you can through in some loafs if it's business-casual (no blue suede Todds with colored lining, but perhaps some black without bling ferragamo's, etc...)
people don't not hire you because you're cool.
That’s false, I was hired because I’m cool.
So suck my fucking cock buddy.
Geez, do not take fashion or life advice from someone named "International Pymp". It does not matter what brand your suit is - you're a intern for god's sakes. Jos A Bank is just fine. Trust me, nobody expects you to be rolling in cash as a college student, and they don't blame you for spending your limited spare change on kegs of Natty Lite. Looking flashy will make you look like a douche. And leave the contrast collars and french cuffs at home as well.
people don't not hire you because you're cool.
lbs, you feel me on that huh?
There is a Nordstrom in paramus NJ that always has nice suits on sale, I got a couple of Bosses for $400-$600 and a versace for $1400.00 they also have sick Zegna ties for around $200
Go to Nordstrom Rack or Off Sak's and buy one navy and one grey suit. Get them altered there at the store - wear a button down and dress shoes there so you know it fits properly. With $800 or so you can probably get a pair of nice Boss or Abboud suits that will be flexible (navy and grey go with everything) and reasonably priced.
For shirts, don't spend more than $30-40 apiece. Either wait for a sale at Brooks Brothers or even just go to somewhere like Express and grab some solid blues, whites and pinks. Any summer buying RLPL shirts or Zegna ties will look like a tool or be wasting money when they don't have much to begin with.
Attention Monkeys:
Alton Lane (www.altonlane.com) in the Flatiron District.
You can get a custom suit for under $500.
Custom shirts are $75.
Custom pants are $89.
Great quality, colors, and service.
Run by former bankers who left to start their own biz.
Your measurements take 30 seconds because they use a computerized body scanner.
Anyone who buys off the rack clothes is a fool and wasting money.
These clothes will fit so well. You will be disgusted with the parachute-style Brooks Brothers crap you've been schlepping around.
Oh, and for the prestige whores: when I was picking up a few shirts the other day at Alton Lane, a group of Goldman MDs were picking out suits and winter coats.
I'd also check out Century 21; I've found some good suits there around $400 - you just need to know which brands are quality and which aren't. No one is going to give a fuck what suit you wear though - it will spend 95% of the day hanging on the back of a chair or a coat rack.
What you should worry about it getting good shoes, because those can not only last a while, they will make you seriously uncomfortable if you get something shitty.
^^^ best bang for the buck.
Go with a solid color plain fabric with a slim notch lapel that is modern, not trendy. At the end of the day a successful intern is one that the elders can relate too, and it's hard to relate to a young intern who dresses poorly... -Richard

I am looking to buy a nice suit. The thing is that people probably won't be looking too closely at my apparel since not many people work here but I think it would be good to have for recruiting for junior summer.
Can anyone recommend where to start? I am talking about the whole thing: dress shirt/Suit/Shoes/Belt/Socks/Ties
Affordable and good quality, i am a college student!
suit supply
Jos A Bank. Get everything you need
Either of the above.
You should also check to see if you even need to wear a suit. A lot of hedge funds, especially very small ones, are casual, sometimes very casual (and I don't mean shorts and flip flops, but jeans and a nicer shirt). I understand for interviewing but check to see if you even need one for now.
Suit Suggestions for Wealth Management Internship (Originally Posted: 05/16/2013)
As a rising sophomore student, I will be working as an intern at a Los Angeles Wealth Management firm this summer and would love some help picking a suit. I was thinking about going with a regular Brooks Brothers suit, as I'm not sure what is generally acceptable in a Wealth Management office. What do you guys think, from your experience?
BB is more than enough, kind of even overkill for a rising soph... Don't start spending big cash on suits for a few more years. Any good brand name (Ralph Lauren etc) that you can find in Macy's will do. Jos. A Bank also has some deals around this time of year which might be more in your price range.
For a rising sophomore I'd suggest Jos Bank. Sometimes they have deals like 3 suits two shirt and two ties for the price of one suit, and they fit well enough and last a while.
Out of curiosity where do you go to school? I'm at a non-target in Cali and found it nearly impossible to find a wealth management internship for this summer…
im also a freshman
I go to the University of Chicago, which I am pretty sure is a target school--we have a lot of OCR.
Do they wear suits out west?
You might be better served buying some hoodies, hemp necklaces, cargo shorts, and flip flops
Fixed that for you.
Hahaha, who really knows! Maybe I'll get a suit tailored out of hemp.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! :)
Mens Wearhouse or Jos A Bank. Buy 1 get 1 or 2 free. Navy, Charcoal, Grey. Have them tailored so they fit.
don't forget to grease the hair, it's a must.
Haha awesome, I had a couple friends at HW, Buckley, and Campbell Hall (if you have heard these). I'm from the valley myself, LA represent!! haha
SA suits? (Originally Posted: 06/14/2012)
So I'm in desperate need of some new suits and am looking for advice. What brand (Jos. A Bank, Brooks Brothers, etc.) would be best for a SA? I don't want to roll in with a cheap suit, but I don't want to spend a grand on each. Also, which colors are best? Thanks.
Grey, Navy Blue.
Jos. A Bank is a bit more common than BB, but both are fine. Don't get pleated trousers, and don't get cuffs that roll up at the bottom. No, you won't grow another inch anymore. Sorry. Get it tailored, probably not by the in house tailor at a JAB, they are awful. BB you might be ok. And make sure they don't put you in a suit a size too big. If you have a salesman that is an older American (think in his 50's or 60's) there is a really high chance that he'll put you in a suit that doesn't fit you well. This is because everyone with taste who is in their 50's or 60's is not a salesman at a JAB.
Good luck.
Jos A. Bank, Men's Warehouse, and Brooks Brothers (more on the expensive side) aren't bad. Depending on what your signing bonus was, I'd get at least 2 suits maybe 3. Jos A. Bank and Men's Warehouse may not have great durability since the quality isn't exactly Armani, but for the next 2 years it'll get the job done. Brooks Brothers is slightly more expensive, but there may be discounts. Since nobody gives a crap what brand an SA wears, I'd spend around $300-$500 including all the tailoring and accessories. If it matters to you that much, you could buy a nice $600-$800 suit for yourself for meetings or things of that sort. I personally think it's not worth it since in this day and age suits don't get promotions.
Safest color for one is navy. Black pinstripe or grey would be good for the other. Don't buy a cream suit. That's like wearing the MD shirt. As long as your suits fit, nobody really gives where they're from if you're an SA.
Indochino.com Once you get the sizing right they are easily best for the money (300-400)
+1 for Indochino, but the sizing on the first suit will not be 100%, and it also takes ~3 weeks for it to arrive.
Go to Brooks Brothers. Starting Sunday, their semi-annual sale begins. You can get their 1818 Collection for ~$700 each, down from $900. Look into the Milano or Fitzgerald fits, those are their most slender and youthful. I'm going to advise that you stay away from J.A.B. They are pretty crummy, to be honest. I don't know your financial situation or the environment you're working in, but a good starter suit is an investment in your future. Step up a bit for your first one, and get other ones that you can rely on to build out your closet.
thanks guys
Go to MySuit on Madison if you're in NYC. Their super 120's cost about 600 dollars. I recently just got a suit that fit me like a glove. You probably won't go back to wearing off the rack suits once you try a tailored suit. If you want to get a really nice suit and have upwards of 800 dollars to blow (which you don't seem to have) then you should try Michael Andrew's Bespoke or Louis Purple.
I got a Louis Purple suit to go out in, and I get complimented by both men and women all the time.
Make sure to not get a black suit. Black suit are an immediate tell that you have no sense of fashion. People think you're a waiter or came from a funeral. Stick with navy and grey for the first 2 suits. Once you figure out what's acceptable you can go from there.
FYI, Brooks Brothers is having their big semi-annual sale starting Monday. You'll be able to get a suit there for relatively cheap.
Nordstrom is also having their semi-annual sale right now.
Starting July 20th they will have their annual anniversary sale much cheaper.

I am going to be interning at a VC firm and was planning on buying a Navy suit. I was thinking either Suitsupply or Brooks Brothers, but wanted to know other good options from those in industry. Also, should I focus on Navy Wool Suits or another material?
J. Crew Ludlow isnt bad, but Suitsupply is considered the best for the price (4-500). You could also try similar priced options at Nordstrom Rack or Saks off 5th.
Marks and Spencer also has some good suit.
Aren't VCs a bit more relaxed w.r.t. formality in the office?
just on the west coast...
I recommend Enzo's. You'll get a completely custom suit, plus a custom shirt, plus a tie for approximately $615.
When I say custom, I mean custom. You effectively get to pick everything about the suit from the buttons to the thread color of the patch with your name on the inside of the jacket.
I will never purchase off the rack clothing again.
Awesome, thanks for the note. I'll look into it.
Navy’s are definitely the way to go. In fact blues are even more in fashion at the moment. It also depends, do you want to go custom made or OTR? How much is your budget?
Ideally custom or near custom. If it's OTR, I'd want it like suitsupply that will tailor all the other stuff. Under 500 is the budget
Get the $399 plain navy suit from suit supply. They buy that fabric in bulk but it's still very high quality.... with tailoring and everything you should walk out
depends on your budget. If possible i would definitely go to a tailor. Can't beat that!

http://www.paulcostelloeman.co.uk/catalogue/carney-ocean-blue-slim-fit-…
I would go for a navy blue
That is a navy blue?.. That will work perfectly fine, don't listen to this shmuck.
I can't say I'm a fan of blue, but the cut looks pretty decent
It's not really navy blue, it's a bit brighter.
Yes, it's not really navy.
Shit, I'm wondering whether I should return this one and go for a super classic navy
Navy blue or not, its still a nice color.
Okay, it is not your classic "navy blue." In my opinion, its even better. Dark navy's look black from a distance. I see people wearing these suits all the time in Manhattan with light brown/tan shoes and matching belt. Looks very clean. Would take it over a "classic navy" suit any day.
Of course it looks cool - wouldn't buy it otherwise ;) , just worried that it's too brash for an intern. I have no idea how conservative the MDs at my firm are - wouldnt want to look like a fool!
Thank you for your replies though
If you are only looking for 1-2 suits, go for a classic navy blue or classic charcoal grey (both look black from a distance, interestingly).
If you can afford to get a few more pairs of suits, pick this one up too - it's a great color that goes with both black and brown shoes and is pretty versatile. But, yes, it is not as conservative as the other two colors.
Curious to hear from others about this: Which of the following two would y'all buy?
A: http://www.indochino.com/product/the-premium-italian-navy-suit
B: http://www.indochino.com/product/The-Essential-Navy-Suit
I'm possibly in no position to advise, but A looks better in my opinion.
I wouldn't go with A solely because it is a single vent suit. Everything about A looks better except the single vent, but B is still a very nice suit as well.
I'd go with A if money/budget is not an issue. I personally am actually planning to buy B, due to budget constraints. Both look like great options though, made from 100% wool and lined with bemberg instead of plain old poly.
guess thats why its $200 more
customizable...you can chose whatever vents you want
Intern Suit Help (Originally Posted: 04/07/2014)
I have a grey suit that would otherwise be great for my internship (suits only required when client in office; Asset Management firm) however I bought it in high school when I wasn't as astute about fashion trends and the pants are pleated and cuffed.
Will I be constantly ridiculed for my poor choice or can I get away with it? Is it possible to have a tailor recut the pants to be flat front?
Attention to detail is important in finance and you'll inevitably have superficial guys judging you. Source: I judge people for superficial reasons. In my opinion, you should not wear a pleated and cuffed suit for your internship.
I don't have the answer to your tailoring question, but I would suggest posting it somewhere else for an answer; reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice would probably answer this question quickly. Also consider trying Styleforum.
If you're gonna need a new suit, I'd recommend J.Crew Factory's Thompson Suit. On sale you should be able to grab one for around $200, and they run sales all the time. It is truly slim-fitting and stylish.
Tailoring of that level will be so expensive you might as well we'll get a new suit. You also need at least 2 suits I case one is at the cleaners when a client visits the office. Navy Blue and Charcoal.
You won't be able to get rid of the pleats, it just won't look right and won't be worth the money.
Do you need pleats? (lower body too big). They aren't the worst and can look fine if subtle enough. When you get your signing bonus or first paycheck go out an get two new suits, navy and charcoal.
I judge people on a sartorial basis, but I doubt the OP will be judged much further for his suit than confirmatory evidence that he's a little green.
Also, I concur with the recommendations here; get two suits: navy and charcoal - plain, not patterned.
Patterns/stripes are acceptable ONCE you have the basic solids, but just grab the solids first. You'll never regret it and you'll be glad you did.

Any comments on this suit?
I know it is not 100% wool but I am just seeking opinions on the color
Hopefully an actual professional comes along to give you advice, but as far as I know, as long as it isn't black or too bold, it's pretty much fine. Navy and gray are popular choices.
When do you start? Most people wear seersucker June through August, so you'd look a bit out of place in that.
they dont wear suits? can you explain what you meant please
1) no they don't, unless you're at a random shitty boutique 2) even if they did, you still wouldn't look out of place as a summer intern
It's fine.
As long as it fits right I think that it will look good!
You don't have to worry! As long as you have the looks this suit won't be a problem matching up your style! :)
I post the obvious answer... Suit looks well-shaped. Just make sure that it fits (that is way more important than having a 100% 160 Super New Zealand mohair wool suit for $>1k)
What sampearson said - as long as it fits well
If it fit's. Slim Navy is pretty standard.
Just make sure it fits. Some of you all would be surprised how good those low quality bespoke suits look on people.
Go and try suits on at a few stores. Find a brand/style that fits your body type. See what looks best in navy or dark grey and have it minimally tailored as needed.
its an okay suit, if you like how it fits you its worth it but you can get something all wool for the price

Just make sure it fits properly and your golden
Agree--especially in the jacket.
color is fine.....its navy....
Looks sharp. Get it tailored appropriately and for the love of God don't get the pants tailored any shorter than the model on the site.
I'm gonna have to second this.
That's nice color and fit. should get it
Looks great, just get it tailored.
Great suit! I have a jacket simialr to this colour too
if your shoulders are wider than on the model then you're good, if not, I don't like it, ruins the suit
It bugs me every time when I see a dude with excessively short pants so they can expose their stripe colored socks.
BB commercial banking SA Suit Question (Originally Posted: 03/29/2013)
Hello all,
So i am working at a BB as a commercial banking analyst for the summer. My contact at the office said I would need to suit up everyday, which is fine with me. He also said to lean towards the conservative look. But I was wondering what the deal was with colors, styles, etc. I currently have a pretty basic navy suit which I interviewed with, but I need to buy a few more.
I have a bunch of my fathers suits (passed away), which are reallly nice suits ($1000+) which I could get taylored for myself. But, had a lot of pinstripe suits. Is it alright to rock pinstripes that arent that loud as a intern? Or should I just go out and buy some solid colored suits.
The suits I want to get taylored for myself is a dark charcoal wth a slight pinstripe, a blue with a slight pinstripe.
Also whats the deal with double breasted suits? I personally think there pretty badass but whast the deal with them on the street these days? Is it a major no no?
If he said conservative, then keep it simple. Charcoal/Grayish suits, blue and white shirts only. Simply ties with little to no patterns.
TTB covered most of it. Light pinstripes are ok with solid shirt/tie. Flat front pants. Send all your double-breasted suits over to Salvation Army. The word you are looking for is tailored. And no fucking square-toed shoes.
Hey now a guy can hope for the 80's to come back and with it double breasted suits.
I'd pick up a pair of Allen Edmonds Park Avenue shoes in black and wear them every day to work (use shoe trees and get them re-soled once a year). Stylish and timeless but at the same time literally as conservative as it gets.
alright thanks for the tips I think I know what I am leaning towards now with what I am going to get fitted for myself.
Also to the haters out there...Im not going to rock the double breasted to work obviously, but in a more casual setting Id rock it in a heartbeat cant out do the badassness of the double breast plus they have swag for days.
No...just no. Maybe for an 80's party or halloween.
You can never go wrong with a tux.

I'm soon starting an internship. Since I already have navy blue and charcoal suits I bought today one which is from the colour similar to this one:
http://just-for-the-boys-berlin.de/fotos/img30449/640/50_1_B-0030_foto0…
(Of course not with an orange tie..)
Thanks for the advice.
Great 3rd suit in my opinion
Also, that suit doesn't look bad with that orange tie and would look awesome wth some others...
Great. Thanks :) I personally like it really much too. But sometimes I find the rules what to wear in IB and what not a bit weird. The last time a analyst also said to me "No brown in town". Because I was wearing brown shoes to a navy suit..
I thought you were referring to housing from your title.
Haha. Sorry. Not my native language.
