Jet skiing from Chicago to New Orleans

I wanna do this.
1. Is this legal? Can I just get a jet ski and go?
2. This guy got people to donate goats to Africans. How is that related to him riding a jet ski? Would it be possible for me (not famous comedian) to do the same?
3. What would you bring? ~1K miles at ~40 MPH = 25 hour trip. Probably 2-4 days depending on how much you stop. So just food, water, sleeping bag, extra gas? Is it legal to bring a firearm if I have an IL license?
Is it legal to drink and jet ski? I met a guy who got a DUI on a lawn mower.
1) pretty sure its legal, dont see why it wouldnt be
2) i guess he did it as a medium to get people to donate to africa? i guess its similar to a run for cancer, in the sense people run and donate to a cause,
3) as for what i would bring, probably a 12 pack of bitches and a lot of alcohol. its legal to drive boat under the influence, with the BAC changing from state to state. in michigan the limit is 0.10 i think, but i've gotten away with much worse. If you're driving a jetski the right way you should look like you're drunk anyways so its pretty easy to get away with.
well the people running are seen as supporters of a cause and those who are too lazy to run or want to support a cause by providing financial backing donate to the charity or whatever.
Please, go ahead and try it.
BWI is the boating equivalent of a DWI. It's illegal.
Driving a jetski at 40 mph for more than maybe a quarter mile at a time is very draining. Its not easy to do. Driving a boat on the Mississippi is hard. a jetski would get tossed around by the current and the commercial barges. These barges can throw up wakes that can reach 5+ feet. You would have to have a SAG team to go with you. There are stretches on the river that go for hundreds of miles with no fuel stations.
This is not something you just decide to do on a saturday afternoon and leave the next morning.
EDIT: Honda F12X GPSCape 3.1gph @ 35mph = 11.29mpg / 12.2gph @ 60mph = 4.92mpg
Kawi STX-15F 3.7gph @ 35mph = 9.46mpg / 10.5gph @ 63mph = 6.00mpg
Yamaha FX HO 4.5gph @ 35mph = 7.78mpg / 10.8gph @ 60mph = 5.55mpg
Sea Doo RXP 6.4 @ 35mph = 5.47mpg / 15.9gph @ 67mph = 4.21mpg
Okay, these things have fucking terrible MPG. I would need like 10 tanks of fuel. I could probably fit 4-5 on there and stop somewhere to refuel. Maybe even less depending on how easy it is to find gas along the Mississippi. Spot(s) would need to be chosen ahead of time of course.
Heister has the best response. I have owned a couple new two seater waverunners for lake use and spent a ton of time driving them around. You basically burn through gas and oil like crazy. Driving even on a controlled lake environment in choppy water at a sustained 45mph is rough. Unlike a boat, you dont cut through the water and you aren't really secured in a seat. You have to understand, when the water is choppy, even sitting down the impact of the water on your craft is jarring and you can feel once you reach certain speeds how unstable you are and likely to get thrown. I could honestly only top mine out at 62mph when the water was smooth as glass early morning.
You would need a new jetski, at most 2 years old. Not one that has been used in salt water. If you are planning on carrying an extra 20 to 30 gallons of fuel you will have to have a 4 seat ski. Those new are 15 to 20k. These things break down all the time. Buying a used one would be asking for problems.
You need to drastically adjust your speed expectations. The majority of the ride would be done at most 20 mph. The current will eat you alive if you were to bail at high speed. You will never get back to you ski unless you tie yourself to it. Which is very dangerous in of itself.
I've spent a fair amount of time riding jet skis guys, I know the deal.
So check this out: http://www.sea-doo.com/watercraft/sea-doo-spark/specs.html
$5K, 8 gallons storage
At minimum this is what you should be looking at.

That spark you linked to had 0 suspension.
I can't drop more than like $5K on this. Can you rent jet skis for extended periods of time?
Dead man cords were designed to solve that problem.
Don't go on the Mississippi.
Jet skis get miserable if its choppy, not sunny and hot or you run out of beer and snacks.
Safest option is to be followed by a boat, but that's not happening. I'll just get a waterproof flip phone with 911 on speed dial.
A friend of mine used to water ski on the Mississippi. Watch out for gators.
This would be comparable to riding a dirt bike with no suspension through the woods for 1000 miles.
And just like the suspension on your vehicles, those wear out too. Especially because they weren't originally designed to take that kind of beating.
The first and last hour would be fun. The rest, not so much
Surprisingly your arms tense up tire out from holding on to the jet ski if you are going pretty high speed for even 30 minutes, worse if choppier.
