Joining megafund out of undergrad - then what?
What do analysts who join BX/ Silver Lake/ Cerberus/ Elevation out of college do once they complete their two or three year contract? Do they get promoted to a pre-MBA associate position at the fund or do they jump to another megafund vis a vis a headhunter?
I believe most of those cultures are "up and out" but there is always room for direct promotions given exceptional performance and value creation.
if you look at the bios of some of the mega funds who hire analysts out of undergrad, you'd notice some people stay and associates at the firm after 2-3 years.
I know a guy that did B school afterwards,,,, but I'm not sure what "most" people do
Rising through Megafund PE (Originally Posted: 06/14/2012)
From what I understand, it's pretty easy to get a 3rd year promotion in IBD, but most people want to jump over to the buyside or attend business school. But how difficult is it to rise at a megafund PE shop? How difficult is it to return to your pre-MBA shop after b-school?

Compensation/Trajectory for Undergrad Hires (Originally Posted: 08/03/2014)
Hi all,
Could anyone shed some light on what compensation for pre-MBA associates hired out of undergrad looks like at megafunds like Bain Capital, TPG, or KKR? How does it compare to IBD BB? Also, do megafunds follow a similar 2 years+out path for undergrad hires? Any insight is appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
For BX it's a 3 year program, with compensation the first two years similar to banking and a jump in the third year, so overall it's comparable to 2+2. You can stay on past 3 years but I don't think any of their analysts do. Hard to say for the other megafunds as the programs are still very new.
Thanks for the response. Do you know what the BX analysts tend to do after the 3 year program? Bschool?
Also interested.
Are there major differences in megafund analyst programs and those of say an upper mm fund?
Megafund FT Ugrad (Originally Posted: 02/26/2013)
I am interested in working full-time at a megafund after undergrad in one of the 3 year analyst programs.
I am working at a top IBD group (GS TMT/MS M&A/BX RR) this summer and have begun talking to people at some of the funds (Apollo/Silverlake/BX/KKR).
When does FT Ugrad recruiting begin for megafunds. If I get an offer from this summer, will the funds accomodate my offer deadline?
Thanks in advance.
I have no information that would be valuable to you but wanted to say that you are in a really really good position right now. top notch SA offer locked up and already talking to people at mega funds
kkr and apollo do not hire undergrads
This is correct, but TPG has started, so you can add them to your list. Yes - assuming youre from a target where you are protected by OCR from having to accept your offer early, you should have a deadline to accept that is late enough where you'll have more than enough to interview whereever you want.
SA not through OCR so not really protected. And i've heard that most SAs with return offers accept before September. Don't want to burn bridges especially at such a top tier banking group.
If I end up getting an offer from my banking group this summer, does it make more sense to stick to sell-side advisory for 2 years then PE or go to a decent fund (cerberus/warburg caliber)? Eventual goal is megafund.
you would be crazy to turn down warburg if you want to have a career in private equity
