JP morgan CIB private equity group

guys

I work for a PE companys' portfolio company and have a associate offer from JP Morgan. Does anyone have idea about the work culture, prestige and exit opportunities either within JPM or to PE firms from this group after couple of years. I am graduating from NYU next week.

They just got moved to brooklynmetrotech from midtown

There is potential for movement within JPM, and it was pretty typical while I was there for folks to come to IB from other business segments (like commercial bank or PWM). I don't know how this role would compare to others for that mobility.

However, this is not a role that would get you looks from PE firms after a couple years. You may be able to do accounting at a PE firm, but this won't get you to the deal side.

If you want to work in PE, I'd either try to move into IB and then make the jump, or try to network your way there while working at a portfolio company.

Best of luck.

Thanks Negative Basis, very insightful feedback. I dont want to do accounting at all.

My long term plan is to go into VC and start a firm with my B-school buddies.

The only reason I liked this job was the fact I'll be meeting with the clients and working with them on creating a portfolio return models (payout, waterfall models etc) Its mostly finance and technology. There is some accounting but its more on the review side say 10-15% of the work.

At my present firm I work for CFO so do portfolio /cashflow modeling, and get some deals my way as its a small shop.

So in conclusion keeping my long term objective I think this job will help me to:

  1. JPM on my resume rather than a small/medium AM boutique name. This will help me attract investors later (5-7 years when we plan to open our VC firm) or move to another big name bank

  2. Learn different LP-GP structures and payout models and structure as they have many clients all in different businesses

  3. Maybe, ability to move to other divisions or location (California or Asia) of JPM and get experience there.

  4. Big deal exposure at JPM

  5. Easy to build network while working for a big brand bank

  6. If things don't move up at JPM , exit to a smaller AM firm or back to my firm to a VP position in 2-4 years.

Do you guys think these are reasonable expectations or I am exhibiting irrational exuberance, as this is a back -office role

Thanks

Agreed. In my opinion, this looks like the best opportunity for both the near and long term future.
