Keeping your suits and shoes from getting wet
Hello I was wondering what kind of suggestions you gentlemen had about this.
I am looking for something under $100 that i can carry around easily.
Also, are shoes generally water proof when there is only light rain?
suits: wear an overcoat or buy an umbrella.
shoes: no, the leather could be ruined, especially in the north where there will be salt as well as moisture. google "dress overshoes" and you'll find what you want. these range from full on galoshes to just something that covers part of the shoe.
An overcoat or umbrella? What are those? Things that keep your suit dry?
Rain and especially ice and snow (and really road salt) destroys shoes particularly if they're leather soled. When I was younger I took a pair of leather soled shoes to a cobbler because they were about to wear through. It was right before winter and he said I should just put a rubber sole on them and wear the whenever there was a chance of winter weather. Over the years I've done the same thing and it saves a ton of money. If you're in the northeast you'll destroy shoes so don't buy nice ones before the winter. You'll just ruin them.
Also get them shined often during the winter months and it'll keep them longer.
Buy shoes with rubber soles. There aren't a ton of high quality options but still some good ones. AE Bleecker St, Cole Haan Lenox Hill, etc.
Plus, any goodyear welted shoes can have their soles totally replaced. If my AEs are beat anyway, I'll wear them in winter and just pay the $125 come spring to replace the bottom.
The best way to keep your shoes from getting wet is to not wear them in the rain. I have a cheap pair of dress shoes that I use when it's bad weather outside. Or you can leave your dress shoes in a drawer at the office and then just change into them when you get there.
Keep the shoes shined and polished often, it will help protect them from the rain, snow and salt. Also pick up a pair of golashes/rubber overshoes, I think they are $15 at the local shoe shine place

I also have two "rain" suits I wear with crappy weather. Nothing special, just older suits that aren't in my normal rotation anymore
On shoes - when it rains, most people either wear a pair of beater shoes or wear galoshes (rubber sleeves that go over your shoe).
On galoshes, I've noticed that quite a few people in finance wear the SWIMS galoshes (http://www.swims.com/MEN/Galoshes.aspx) but they're like ~$100 which is a little absurd. As Bobb mentioned above, Tingly is a cheaper alternative but some would argue they don't look as good (if that's something you care about)
I personally wear an old pair of beater shoes when commuting to work and then change into a pair of proper/nicer shoes once at the office.
Wear rain boots and change into your dress shoes at the office. LL Bean makes a great pair of boots that I think you could wear casually as well
I wear these Gucci loafers and keep my good shoes in the office when the weather is crummy.

These shoes are pure rubber (not just the soles) so weather has no effect on them and they just sort of look like patent leather.
You could just leave a nice pair of shoes in the office to change into. Maybe wear a pair of bean boots on the way in, nobody ought to shoot you for being practical.
Here in Canada it's pretty common to get overshoes for your dress shoes so the salt/snow doesn't ruin them during the winter. They're called "swimmers" here.
.....
There are a number of option that you have to choose from.
Shoes: For shoes, you can cover them up or wear an older pair. I have an older pair I wear but when I polish them I also throw a coat of mink oil on them.
Shoe trees are also very important if your shoes get wet. It helps draw out the moisture and if they're completely soaked, you can stuff them with newspapers and then swap in your shoe trees later.
Oh and you could always get a super awesome poncho, I hear they're very stylish.
