Career Resources
Congrats brotha! Make sure to look at WSJ and be familiar with the markets // look at WSO Database. If you're not from a finance background they probably won't grill you with techs but at least be familiar with them and supplement that lack of knowledge with passion and interest.
I was in a similar position -- there are few feelings better than getting that "congrats we want to extend you an offer" call" coming from a non-target. Let us know how it goes, best of luck!
Thank you! Great advice. I believe I can demonstrate a sincere interest in IB and Wells Fargo. And I bet there isn't! If I do not receive an offer, I will be very glad to have had the experience and will post about it here asap.
Interview will likely be a mix of behavioral and technical, check out ibankingfaq for a good rundown of possible questions. Given it's ECM, it would be helpful to have some insights and views on the US equity markets in the back of your pocket.
At the end of the day, it will boil down to fit - if they like you and your story - why WFS, why ECM, etc. - you'll be in a good position. Definitely show your enthusiasm for the opportunity and be confident throughout the interviews.
Thanks! I actually don't have an answer to "Why ECM?" Would it be alright to mention my interest in small cap stocks I invest in? Or would that sound kinda naive..
Sure, that is a good way to show interest in the markets and you should make it part of your Why ECM story. You're not going to be in an investing role, so I would recommend supplementing with other reasons, perhaps how ECM fits into your long-term career goals.
Hey everyone,
Unfortunately, I did not receive the offer, but I was very grateful to have interviewed as a sophomore. Since this was very time-of-the-essence, they only asked me one question:
What differentiates you from other candidates?
Before I really had the chance to give a full answer, the interview kind of went off track into a conversation about ECM, IPOs, etc - which was great to talk about. So I thought it went very well and I hit it off with the interviewer. They said they really liked my resume.
But I believe they were under the impression I was from UNC Chapel Hill (I am from UNC Charlotte). I am not sure as to why because on my resume it says I currently have an internship and job in Charlotte.
So the grind continues!
Best of luck to everyone still looking. Feel free to ask me anything about it.
First of all, thanks for the update. Not everyone does this, so it's certainly appreciated.
Second, it sounds like you have a great attitude -- keep at it! Even though you're from UNC Charlotte, they clearly liked you enough to have attend the conference and to interview you. Since you mentioned starting off on the right foot with WF, definitely keep in touch with all the guys you met. Just because it didn't work out this year doesn't mean it won't next year.
Read some more guides and regular books on ECM and other areas of interest within finance, work on your behaviorals with upperclassmen or the WF guys, and come back next year with an offer! I look forward to hearing what you do next.
@"broadstbully" @"redrocksky" Thanks and I definitely will. Hoping to make some networking trips in the Chicago, Atlanta, and NYC area sometime if anyone is ever free.
