Summer Intern Housing in NYC

For those of you who have interned in NYC during the summer before, where are some of the best options?

I'm going to be working on the waterfront near to Wall Street.
Is it worth it to pay extra for an apartment that's walking distance away from my job?

Also, is it better to rent out an apartment with a friend of mine, or should I try to get into one of those summer student housing programs like NYU, Columbia or www.studenthousing.org ?

My friend and I are looking for the best balance of price, proximity to workplace (he's working @ the same bank too) and few living restrictions.

Go to NYU Student Housing and put Water St as your first choice. Its directly across the street from the South St. Seaport in a luxury building for $900 a month ($225/week). No nightlife down there, but if you get one of the top floors looking at the Brooklyn Bridge you're probably paying 6 to 7 times less than what the apt is worth. Rooms can also be massive at Water St.

NYU is a steal. I lived in the one on Lafayette (chinatown) and couldn't believe the size of the apartment for the price. I also had pretty good views despite being in Chinatown. If you can get in, do it ... they go fast though. Columbia is much more expensive, extremely far away, and they have weird rules about bringing "guests" back at night.

These guys are right. Nothing beats NYU Summer Housing. Just make sure you speak up on your first day to the facilities staff if your room is not clean. Otherwise you will have to live with the leftovers from the prior student-tenants all summer.

Generally though, almost all of the dorms are nice and a great rent deal for a short period. Craigslist is too hit or miss for comfort.

Send in your NYU Housing app as soon as possible. Spots fill up ridiculously quickly.

university hall, palladium, coral towers, 3rd north

union sq is has access to all the subway lines (to get you midtown east and west with 1 train) and hopping nightlife

make sure to apply EARLY as the best dorms fill up extremely fast

Allright, 3 questios about NYU Housing:

1) the regular dorms don't have air conditioning. How bad is it? it sounds terrible to me, fans are not my favorite.

2)The apartments... if you sign up for a "single" how many "single" rooms are there in one appartment? how about if you sign for "double" or "triple"... how many total people per appartment?

3)Anybody got the meal plan? is the diner decent? because in my school it's not so hot.

AC is a must. It gets very hot in NYC over the summer and you want to come back to a cool apartment and hit the hay.

Live walking distance from work. A 10 minute walk means a little more sleep or the chance to go to the gym

what about subletting an apartment? anyone have some advice on the best methods to find an apartment? i might have anywhere from 1 to 3 other friends living with me, but we'd prefer having individual rooms...

If you want the BEST housing for the BEST price. School of Visual Arts run about 2k for the WHOLE SUMMER. Unbeatable. Get on it, space is VERY limited.

Well, one of my friends had to leave her School of Visual Arts room as it was rat infested, and another had to get a new bed as the bed he received was infested with crabs (yes..genital crabs). Also, 2 summers ago, I believe the place was actually closed down for the summer since it was rat infested (I had inquired about living there as I was interning in NYC at the time). It doesn't sound like it's the most cleanly place...

I subletted a place with 3 friends this summer in midtown and although we paid a bit more than NYU (we paid $1300/month each), it was well worth it to have our own nice place (plus, it came with a plasma, couches, decent furniture). We used Craigslist. We went down to NYC a few weeks early for a weekend and checked out a bunch of the postings on Craigslist. You can find some great deals..but just make absolutely sure that you physically go and look at the place before you agree to sublet it. Some of the places we looked at had great descriptions and photos, but ended up being incredibly crappy.

I've heard mixed things about NYU (I've heard that some of the newer dorms are nice, and that the Water Street and Union Square dorms are good), but it's kind of a pain to have to sign every single person that you have over into the building. But don't live in a dorm without A/C..you will be absolutely miserable. Also, make sure you know your roommates..you can get stuck with all sorts of weird people if you do NYU housing (ANYONE can live in NYU housing over the summer..no age restrictions, etc.).

Lol we did have one mouse than would scurry our floors every once in a while.. But it really was not bad at all. We actually befriended him and we had a poster for a 1mm reward if he was caught lmao

Gramercy Green is probably filled up already. I would go Palladium, also one of the more expensive locations but it's well worth the cost, and I can almost guarantee they still have capacity.

I lived their last summer during my internship and loved it. Great place to live and their new gym is in the basement. Plus, it's a stones throw away from union station which can take you anywhere in Manhattan.

Straight off the front page of http://www.nyu.edu/summer/housing/
Please note, for non-NYU student applicants who will not be enrolled at NYU this summer, we are currently only accepting applications for shared bedrooms in Brittany Hall, our non-air conditioned traditional residence hall.

Yahh, I had to take a night class at NYU SCPS to get into Paladium. $800 class on M&A, met once a week on Mondays. Learned a bit, and I found the $800 price well worth paying for air conditioning and nice apartments lol

I might have 2 rooms available in an apartment near NYU for the summer. If you're potentially interested in one you can PM me - rent approx 1200-1300 for your own room, furnished. Very nice apartment.

i used craigslist with a friend to find a good sublet for 3 months. it was lower west side 1200 each. i would try craigslist because you pay almost 1200/month to do nyu and are stuck in a dorm with a roommate rather than a nice apt. you also have to check people into nyu dorms and have trouble when you want people stopping by. really annoying.

the only problem with craiglist is you literally have to be one of the first people to email the poster about their house. my friend and i took shifts on our blackberries/comps in class checking postings every hour or so during the day.

i would definitely look into the above posters place if i were you.

TBH you're going to have a tough time finding a room this late in the game that is cheap, air-conditioned, AND a single bedroom. If you get off the waitlist at the New School, their Stuyvesant Park dorms were just renovated last year and are quite nice.

Just apply to the NYU dorm so that you have a last resort

You have to pay $500 for the application. Do I get that money back if I change my mind?

I had some great luck with craigslist. Set up 4 appointment for the day after I arrived, stayed with a friend for a couple nights, checked out the places, and had a great summer.

Use at your own risk ... 3 of the places I checked out were complete shit holes/weirdest people I've ever met compared to the pics and description online. Couldn't of been happier with the place I found though.

I lived in the New School and had friends who were in NYU. The New School isn't amazing, but it's a heck of a lot better than the NYU options I've seen, mostly because the buildings are fairly new. The newest dorm is near Union Square which is great if you are interning in Midtown. Demographics is a huge mix, lots of people interning in various capacities, some people taking classes over the summer.

Of course it's cramped and YMMV depending on your roommates, you'll probably be sharing one bathroom among 4 people which can be a pain if you all are interning. I dont think you'll do better if you have decided on staying in student housing. If you can find a sublet, then you can get a much nicer place of course, but that takes a lot of effort, probably costs more, and you'll very likely have to pay for more than 10 weeks.

UWS/MSH...not the most convenient subway routes, but they are cheap. Also, look into NYU housing and other organizations that house summer interns/students.

A lot of people stay in nyu housing but i think that can get a bit expensive, also a big place is Stuy town, but that is near union square, that's cheap and generally meant for students

----------------------------------------------------------------- “It's all nonsense. Firms use titles to pander to the egos of the employees without giving away the store. If you are getting the money, who cares about the title?"

knew alotta SAs who lived in NYU housing and liked it. EHS is a non-profit that does NYC student housing as well, but locations aren't as great and rooms are pretty cramped unless you wanna fork over the cash for a single. Pace also has summer housing, but is closer to the FinDist than midtown.

I was at NYU - Brittany Hall and it was like living in a sweatshop... literally. Was working on Wall Street, the location was great overall but no air conditioning made for miserable living. My room was actually a triple but i only had 1 roommate.

If you cant get a room with air conditioning you are going to be miserable.

I can second this. I lived in Rubin Hall, no AC, with two roommates. It was miserably hot so much so that some nights I could barely sleep, but that being said it was a great experience and I wouldn't trade it looking back. The location was solid, and tons of SAs and kids your age... good times overall...

skdude:
whoever gets a room without air conditioning is an idiot. Most dorms have it. Otherwise go somewhere else.

I did my SA with a Inter-dealer broker and my salary was only like $650/week didnt have a lot of flexibility of where to live. Believe me I was not happy being stuck to live with no A/C when i was one of the first people to submit my application. But yeah only 2 dorms for NYU housing dont have it Brittany and Rubin. I may have lived at Rubin I cant really remember. Was on the 10th and 5th.

Worked in midtown last summer and lived right on Gramercy Park through SVA. Great location, pretty nice building and if you like japs, you'll be in heaven.

"That was then. This is now." - Dick Fuld

LMAO!!!! Best story ever about that....

So fathers day weekend these guys snuck one of them into the building. Had these 2 hot chicks distract the security guy. He was like whats in the package they are like uhh its for my dad fathers day gift. It was a air conditioner.

Those guys got to be pretty popular. I personally just slept in the lounge about half the time.

NYU is probably full by now. They typically fill up very fast and the application has been available for over two weeks. Try EHS housing services. They are a bit more expensive, but they offer housing for the entire time you are in need of it. If you are interning in the financial district, they have housing on 55 John Street (google it-great location for financial district offices) and a few places in Brooklyn. Most people on here seem to be against bridges and tunnels but the commute is actually very short from Brooklyn to where you will be working.

Good luck with the hunt!

you can't really lease apartments for such a short period. either go with a university's summer housing, which can sometimes be pretty expensive, but also easy and convenient, or go on craiglist and look for sublets.

Remember, once you're inside you're on your own. Oh, you mean I can't count on you? No. Good!

studenthousing.org

filled to the brim with ibankers every summer... they run lots of social events. like yankee games, broadway shows... yada yada. I think its non profit too. They just remolded the unit in brooklyn. it is one stop from wall street on the subway. and you also get free gym acess to a sick gym with a pool and the whole deal.

I lived there last summer. feel free to PM me for any details

Do you know if it's filled up or if it fills up quickly?

I worked two blocks away from the Wall St. subway stop and lived in the St. Goerge dorm (in Brooklyn Heights) from www.studenthousing.org. It was a little bit expensive, not very nice, but it was extremely convenient. It took me 15 minutes to get to work, door to door (the subway is literally below the dorm). Another negative thing is that they are very strict about visitors (have to sign them in, can't receive visitors after 10pm or so unless they were previously signed in, have to register them for them spend the night there, etc).

Just out of curiosity, and I know this is a stupid question, but how much does it suck to be wearing a suit in the New York heat during summer on a regular basis? Do people let it slide if you have been sweating?

It's not that hot, think about being in Houston or Cali.

I would absolutely say live at NYU. All the other interns will and you'll have more fun getting to know people your age.

Don't do brooklyn. Do manhattan.

For your internship, you should live in the middle of it all (i.e., all the dorms in union square). For full time, you'll need to live closer to the office, but for the summer, its more fun to live where you can go out (you'll go out a LOT more as summer than as a full-time.

NYU summer housing is not a bad option, if you get a decent building. I had a couple of friends who lived in the apartment style dorms for the summer. I believe they said the cost was around $3200 for 10 weeks in a shared bedroom. Not terrible, but I recommend reaching out to people that you know who live in the city. I bunked up with a couple of friends of mine who are full time analysts and it was a great experience.

Glad someone revived this thread. Haven't really started looking seriously yet but I'll be moving to NYC for either NYU or CBS and the housing costs are intimidating. Was considering the NYU Palladium but I don't want to destroy my budget and so might just do Jersey or somewhere further out. But then again I don't want to live so far from the action my first year.

Also regarding heat, it doesn't get that hot but it gets really humid, at least compared to Chicago. It was like 70 and I was sweating when I was there for interviews. Not sure how people handle that.

I would stay with the relatives in midtown. Will this arrangement be rent-free for you? If so, you will obviously also be saving a decent chunk of money as well. Also, don't worry about the social aspects, there will be plenty of time for that in the bull pen and at social events organized by your bank. This is a no-brainer in my opinion.

PerennialAmbition:
Is there anyway I can even rent for only two months and if so what are some decent and available options.

Yes, you can rent for only 2 months. There are a few options. First, a lot of colleges in Manhattan offer summer housing for interns. Unfortunately, you're pretty late in the game. School's like NYU fill up within the first few days the application is released. You could look into other college's though. Second, you could search "sublets/temporary" on NYC's craiglist. There are plenty of people offering 2 month sublets. However, there are a lot of illegitimate ads on craigslist so you'll have to wade through the bullshit. Good luck.

I've always heard people recommend NYU, if only because everyone living there is in similar situations and when you actually do have downtime there's people around to meet and hang out with.

MM IB -> Corporate Development -> Strategic Finance

You've probably made a decision by now, but the Marymount Manhattan is a good option. I'm interning for BofA as well this summer and it's roughly 12 blocks away.

NYU Housing, submit an app now before they fill up. You'll be with a ton of other kids working in finance, everyone else there is college age, and it's only $1140 a month for a double. Your social options will be a bit better there than living by yourself, and you remove the crapshoot that EHS is. Some people love it, others absolutely loathe it.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

You can call and ask, they'll be pretty honest with you. You just have to get through the hold time, normally less than 20 minutes.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Thanks, I've found a few options that might work out. I'll definitely give NYU a call though.

Can you comment on the commute from midtown to downtown? I'll be working downtown but I've found a few promising sublets in the midtown area.

EHS has a property, 55 John Street, pretty close to my work place but it's ridiculously expensive.

Commute isnt bad (15-20min subway ride depending where you are). The trick is, find a sublet near a 4,5 station not a 6 station. If you are near a 6 station you need to switch to a 4,5 (the express trains) and take them down to wall or fulton street depending where you work downtown. If you find something for a good price near the 4,5 stations then go for it man, commute not to bad. The west side is a different story, I am assuming you are looking east.

Not too sure about that house specifically. Would definitely recommend the law housing at NYU. Stayed there a couple of years ago. Biggest rooms and by far the nicest...will cost a little more, but well worth it.

i wanted to do this but it's only 9 weeks

Been to all the dorms. Alumni hall is great if you're looking to live in a single - a few blocks from the yellow line. It's not particularly spacious but it's convenient and in a good location. Carlyle and Coral are closer to Union Square (the 14th st Subway station has many more lines running through it), but altogether I'd rather live in Alumni.

Appreciate your insight about the dorm. Does anyone else have any insight on the best dorms to live in at NYU?

cowgomoo:
Can't decide if a single is worth the extra $800.
The last thing you want to deal with when your soul is getting crushed by 100-hour weeks as a summer is coming home to a hipster musician roommate cooking his own food and watching independent film with three friends over in your shared bedroom at 1am on Wednesday night. Pay for the single. The short-term outlay is well worth the peace of mind and rest that will help you perform better in the internship and secure the full-time offer that will put you on a career trajectory with immense NPV.

I would stay away from Brittany and Rubin due to the fact that they don't have A/C and NYC summers are pretty bad.

Carlyle has decent sized rooms, but there’s no private space due to the fact that the bedroom is shared space with the kitchen/other rooms.

Honestly I don't know why you want to live in an NYU dorm, just sublet it'll save you a crapload.

Yeah, I've been checking out Craigslist for spots. Is there any particular neighborhood in Manhattan I should focus on though? Sorry, I've been to NYC twice and I'm actually not sure of which bank I'll be at due to the nature of my internship (SEO).

On the topic of summer housing: I noticed a lot of universities offering summer housing for interns have residency periods ending before the end of my SA. For example, SVA housing period is May 19 - Aug 3 (whereas my SA ends in late August). What do SAs do if they have to move out of dorms and have a 1-2 weeks remaining on the job? Do they find other places to live for 1-2 weeks?
