Lazard --> PE

How good in general is Lazard as a preparation for buyout-funds? How well does Lazard place at top funds?

If your aim was to land a gig at B'Stone/Carlyle/etc., would you take Lazard M&A over similar groups at MS, LB, or GS?

Cheers,

B.

Lazard is top notch and places very well in buyout funds, especially considering their smaller size. It would be a tough decession between them at GS, but in the end it would come down to the group you are looking at, and perhaps other factos like location, fit, etc. In my opinon both Lazard and GS are on a slightly different level than MS and LB. With current market conditions Lazard might be one of the more attractive places to go as the BB world is in turmoil.

They're on the same level as BBs when it comes to buyside recruiting. I don't think you could say they're better or worse than other BBs on that front, it really comes down to the individual at that level more than the firm/group.

As Patrick said, Lazard may actually be a good bet in these times because they have 0 of the subprime/mortgage-related mess/writedowns that are affecting everyone else. They do mostly M&A and have a great restructuring practice as well... always a bonus in times of chaos like the present.

If you have the option, I might actually recommend them over other BBs simply because they're less prone to massive layoffs and therefore a bit more stable.
