Thoughts on living in Astoria
Hey guys,
I will be moving to NYC in July to work for M/B/B. I have been talking to some buddies and it sounds like your dollar goes a lot farther in Astoria, and its only like 15 minutes to midtown (possibly more if they close the W). Does anyone live out there now / have friends that do? I would love to know what the area is like in terms of safety and how the housing is in terms of value.
Thanks alot
One word: ugh.
It's a real place?? I thought it was just a CD by The Ataris (So Long, Astoria)...
I grew up nearby in Flushing, so I know the area pretty well. Astoria is not a terrible place, I've never had any safety issues and its a lot cheaper than Manhattan. While it might be cheaper, I would recommend trying to get a place in Manhattan if at all possible. There really is no comparison between living in Queens and in Manhattan (I'm currently dorming in Gramercy area.) I would check out East Village, cool neighborhood and not that pricey.
Don't do it! Its farther than 15 minutes and if you are going to live in an outer borough, at least live in Brooklyn.
On a more serious note, these back of the envelope calculations aren't that great in practicality. After a long workweek and casual Fridays, you aren't going to want to trudge back to Astoria. Just suck it up and live on the island.
agreed with ideating, if you look around enough and are willing to make sacrifices in regards to location/living in a walk up, its def possible to find an apt in manhattan with a somewhat reasonable rent
I used to live in Astoria. Getting to Chelsea for work was a pain but to get to Midtown was no big deal and very convenient. As for the place, it's nice and relaxed and definitely worth the bang for the buck.
hehe Astoria.. watch my big fat greek wedding and that's astoria... windex anyone??!?
Stay out of Astoria. I almost rented a room there last summer during my internship.
Its about 6 stops from mid town but you can tell the area definitely changes at night. Although, it is populated. Nothing beats manhattan, period. Its not worth the time and hassle of trying to get out on the weekends. There isn't much to do or eat in Astoria except along the last stop.
It depends on what you're looking for though, i presume. It tilts a little bit closer to a suburban lifestyle.
Its alot farther than 15 minutes. It is cheap, but you will not get to work in 15 minutes. You should do a test run, and walk around the neighborhood and see if you like it.
The only good thing about Astoria is the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. Other than that place, there is no reason to cross the Triborough Bridge. Find a place in Manhattan for the summer.
I have a friend who works at M/B/B and lives in astoria - makes sense since if you are staffed out of town, you will be flying out to the client site for 4 days out of the week. you are also closer to the airport this way.
makes financial sense, but don't expect a poppin nightlife (no one parties everynight anyway)
Astoria is a great place to live if you work midtown. First off if you are going to be working hard, you only going to use your apartment to sleep and get laid, thats it. Astoria has some great apt's for rent and a little more south you have long island city which is coming up with huge loft apt buildings. Astoria's night life is actually amazing, from places like cavo to island, which are lounges with the girls in huge numbers. For your first 2 years, it dosent hurt to live out there to save up some money to get a place of your own as early as you can because renting is throwing away your money every month.

Anyone have any opinions on living in the nicer parts of Astoria near the subway?
-How is the nightlife? -How is the crime/demographic? -How long of a commute would you expect it to be to FIDI?
"-How long of a commute would you expect it to be to FIDI?" Too long.
I have a coworker who used to make that commute. About 45 min total from her apartment to the office (subway). Not the most convenient place to live if you work downtown.
