Living in New York / New Jersey
Where is an ideal place for recent graduates to move to? Ideally, I would like to move to Manhattan however the apartments there are a out of my range. My other alternative is to move to New Jersey.
Where are some cities in NJ that would provide an easy commute to the upper parts of Manhattan? You input is much appreciated.
I know a few guys moved into some of the new condos they just built by exchange place on the Jersey side. They are very nice, fairly expensive but much cheaper than anything of the same quality you would find in Manhattan
what do you mean the "upper parts of Manhattan"? i live in a northern nj subburb that's about a 25-30 minute bus ride from midtown (or a 20 minute bus ride from the GWB station at ~178 st). tons of people commute to the city from here and while i'm not well informed about the local real estate market, i know that 1 BR apartments here go for something around $1K/month
It depends on what you do and what your hours are. With any job with predictable hours, it is definitely doable. On the IBD and Sales side, I think it is more difficult. It looks bad that your late night commuting expenses are higher than other analysts (assuming you're entering in that role)
It also depends on where your friends are. Taking the PATH train back to Jersey after a late night starts to wear on you. But, if all your friends are partying in Hoeboken, it's not that bad.
If you're right near the ferry/path/express bus, your commute isn't bad. But don't forget to factor in extra expenses. You really need to pay for two forms of transit into the city, one to get into NYC and one to get around NYC. Many people have cars in Jersey, so you might to factor in the cost of the car, gas, insurance, maintenance, parking. In manhattan, its generally not necessary. I have a 2 dry cleaners, grocery store, drug store, medical center and blockbuster all within my building.
Costs are about the same (i'm looking at apartments now, and thought about Jersey), but it basically is a quality of life trade between a great location and having more space. If you spend your weekends in manhattan becomes much cheaper. One gypsie cab ride back to jersey a month to drag your drunk self home will probably tip the scales (regular cabs can refuse to drive you to jersey, except to newark airport)
Just get a smaller place on the upper east side. Now rents have come down to the 850-1k/month. Live somewhere between 90-98, its really not that bad. No real restaurants or bars but you get what you pay for.
