Private Members Clubs, London

I'm thinking of joining one. Not one for old, stodgy men but one with young professionals and a good social atmostphere. Any ideas? Also, I want a club with actual services, not just a nightclub.

Tramp is definitely the best club in London. If you don't know anyone who is already a member then I strongly doubt you will become a member. Pretty much every club in London is supposedly members only (movida, aura, cuckoo) but those aren't like Tramp. It's really a club for young people, but young people with old money. Annabell's is also good, but more of the stodgy old men type.

What you’re asking for is tough, since every young professional I know wants to party and party at the best clubs. Everywhere that’s hot in London is going to have arrogant people and in terms of service the only kind you’re going to get is table $ervice. There are two ways to get into the hot clubs in London, first being a member or by getting a table.

Many people wonder why in London there are so many private member clubs. This has to do with licensing laws that prohibited night clubs from serving alcohol unless they had a membership policy. In reality you can get in to most places by guest list (need hot girls) or by table service (except at a few select member clubs).

The Hardest member only clubs in London, TRAMP & ANNABEL’S.

TRAMP: Need to be either extremely rich or well connected. Even being referred by two members has a 2-4 year waitlist. If you’re new to London, you can’t just get Tramp membership, you need to establish yourself in the London scene (become friends with other members)

ANNABELS: Need to be member or guest of member to get in. Again like Tramp becoming a member is extremely difficult.

Table Service: The other way to get into London’s hottest clubs is being friends with some descent looking girls. With a mixed group you’ll be able to get into any club spending a minimum of 2-3 bottles (500-750 pounds). Cuckoo & Crystal are tough; they don’t give a shit if you’re a banker spending $2000 if you got 4 guys and no girl’s tough shit. You really need girls in London to get into decent places.

For dinner clubs RAC and Annabel’s are among the best, for service you have concierge clubs (search online) that charge a fortune for simple services.

In London unlike New York being a banker doesn’t make you baller. Nightclubs here are ruled by rich Arabs and Russians; we’re talking about kids (average age 19) that spend $5000 a week on clubbing. The shit that goes down here is next level; I’m talking about seeing a 17 year kid show up in a Ferrari 430 and buy 6 bottles of Cristal and do it again next week.

You can become a member at tramp within a month or so if you are referred by two members and you buy a jeroboam. Guido will definitely give you a membership if you buy a jero. And as for the $5000 w eek, its definitely way more than that. Two words: James Stunt. If you are in the London club circuit you know this name and what it means.

It really is like that - being a banker is almost a disadvantage in these nice clubs - like u work for a living? often end up telling girls I'm in the circus or shit like that.....

Membership of clubs like Movida is only 500 pounds which is worth it if u go on a regular basis.

As for being on guestlists it's not hard to do but hot girls are essential on entry - they can be viscious about this, I've rocked up in a group of 8, with reservations - 3 bankers and 5 girls, two models and the other 3 pretty hot as well, and the 'hostess' took one look at us and said me and the models could come in but not the others.....

Somehow though brokers will get a bunch of guys into the hottest clubs and straight into VIP, guess they must have connections and the promise of spending lots of cash.....

the talent really IS worth it though!

Yea i can honestly attest to all that is being said about London is true. It really is in another league of wealth when compared to NYC. London money puts manhattan to shame. Take a walk around Belgravia when compared to the upper east side - the difference is dramatic. Its the only place ive ever seen where people will park their Ferrari Enzos and Porsche GT's outside their townhouse. Not even the richest investment bankers can compete in the level of wealth that rich arab/russians can. Bankers arent really a respected breed in london. Most people there could care less about the finance types.

That's because most of the wealthy people are concentrated in that area so you tend to notice them more. Wealthy Americans are spread out throughout this great land of ours. Plus the fact that you repeatedly mention Arabs and Russians speaks volumes. I bet most of it is undeclared income from oil/mafia related businesses stored in some Swiss Bank account without paying a penny on taxes in their home countries.

Obviously IB'ers can never compete with people that own oil reservoirs and fuckin' diamond mines.

ya belgravia is sick. its all about wilton crescent.

it certainly isn't only Arabs and Russians...there are English, Swiss, Israeli, Italian, Argentinian, Germans....the point is that the difference between London and nyc is that London is old money. These are people that have created vast amounts of wealth over multiple generations.

Either way, London is just baller, and its fucking sick.

I can pretty much guarantee you the idiots with yellow enzos parked on the curb are not from established British families.

Also, to whoever said that "London money puts New York money to shame": I find that hard to believe. I'd like to see something to back that up. Just because Manhattan isn't full of classless arab dirtbags who blow it all on Cristal doesn't mean that Manhattan is not as rich.

Yes. Yes. Yes. By no means is it old money from established British families. It is new A Rab/ Russian money from people who have taken advatage of cowboy like markets.

Anyone see the Forbes on billionaires? The United States has like 8x as many billionaires as the next leading country. I can't find the graph for some reason.

Anyway, I hope the Europeans in Europe aren't like the ones you guys ship over here to go to school -- fucking idiots that dress in the stupidest outfits ever.

If you don't know London and you don't know NYC, you probably aren't going to understand the difference. People can only really comprehend things based on their own reality. Things are different. Not better, not worse, just different. If you want to learn, go experience both - there's no need to jump around and get excited about somebody saying their continent has more (or a different kind of) money.

If you can't step outside your own little box, and accept that other people can pass on knowledge to you, you're really not getting much out of being on this forum. Maybe everyone's been right on this thread so far. Maybe nobody's quite hit the nail on the head. If you disagree with someone's statement, maybe you just didn't understand it the way they meant it - or maybe you did.

There's a lot to be learned from people here, Aspiring.

Where in the world are you getting these inferences from?

Total wealth of Forbes billionaires with residency in the state of New York = USD 183 bln

Total wealth of Forbes billionaires with residency in the United Kingdom = USD 153 bln. This includes all nationalities (e.g. Mittal, Abramovich, etc).

Granted this is only billionaire wealth but it does give a good picture. Don't infer people's wealth by the way they spend money.

From around the world....that's the point.

Around the world, things are different in a way that you can't understand without visiting (or maybe even living there). People can only imagine foreign places being different in a way that their mind can comprehend - and that comprehension is based on the places they have been. It's kind of like trying to describe a colo(u)r to someone who has never seen it.

I apologise that my rants have nothing to do with the original topic. I'm just tired of people making comments about what is better, bigger, badder without really being interested in other people's opinions on the topic. What's the point?

Try to learn something...if someone says that London has more wealth than NY and another person points out that wealth in NY is greater, there's something to learn there. Why does one feel that the other has more wealth? What have they experienced? Why are they making their claims? How do they define wealth? How can you use the things you learn about these people to understand the world (your future clients) to make yourself a better person (banker)?

This forum often turns into a High School argument, whereas it could be such a huge wealth of information about people with similar goals living across the globe. Make use of it, learn something that you won't learn at school.

Quit whining. It was a legitimate question, and I'm willing to bet the answer is that Manhattan wins by a small margin.

How can you use the things you learn about these people to understand the world (your future clients) to make yourself a better person (banker)?

What the fuck are you talking about? Do you even know what a career in IB entails? You sound like a middle school guidance counselor. Let me just put it this way: You're asking these people to somehow make themselves into better people through discussion on this forum? I'm sorry, but that is asking the impossible. We're here to do two things: bitch at each other about meaningless shit, and give/receive advice. If you don't like the pointless flaming, go somewhere else.

Hear, hear.

Yeah, the original questions was legitimate. My comments were mostly in response to, "Anyway, I hope the Europeans in Europe aren't like the ones you guys ship over here to go to school -- fucking idiots that dress in the stupidest outfits ever."

Just encouraging people to open their eyes a little bit. If that's what Middle School guidance counselors do, than that's fine.

WOW didn't mean to start this sort of conversation!

I'm a female (soon to be) banker. I have membership at a club in London now through my alumni association, but it's basically for old people. I'm basically interested in a place to chill out--a few bars, a restaurant, etc.

Not worried about Movida, Paper, etc as I have never been rejected from a club in London--mini skirts work wonders :P

Well any club in London that offers services certainly doesn't allow mini skirts. In fact aren't they meant to be a sanctuary from women in the first place? There is some club for girls, I can't remember its name now but it is probably the one you're in if its that j7 membership thing or whatever it's called. At the end of the day young people really shouldn't be getting that pretentious, just go to the restaurants and bars you like, why do you need to feel elite with some membership card. Getting a job in an investment bank doesn't mean you've made it in life. If this was a forum for MDs or something it would make some sense. I'd put it down to social insecurity only for the fact that the alumni link shows you went to a good school.

I'm not joining anything to seek status. Honestly--I go out to a lot of the top London clubs and I'm not impressed with the guys. A lot look good but most aren't intelligent or educated enough for me. I don't say this in a snobby way, but I have a couple degrees and will be starting a good job, I don't want to socialize with idiots.

This is where I can get membership now through my alumni association: http://www.sloaneclub.co.uk/diary/. YAWN. Kind of boring, don't you think?

Just wondering if anyone had ideas! That's all. Somewhere to go after work or for drinks before going to a club, where I can take my friends and relatives for nice lunches, etc. But that's not full of old people who support the British Empire.

fp175:

Yes, because they don't let people into clubs based on their IQ, rather (as discussed above ad nauseam) based on how they look or how much they spend.

I'm certainly not a model, I'd get beat up if I tried to wear a mini-skirt, and I'd rather save my some money than blow it on overpriced champagne.

Despite this I still end up in these London clubs every couple of weeks. However, I much prefer pubs and bars. I always try to find my "Cheers", my own hang out...people are people and guess what...membership is free!

Okay, look. It's not that big a deal if you want to join a club for the "prestige" of it. But to do it and then pretend that you don't care about status?

Unless you are just naive, you are full of shit. It should not be a surprise for you to hear that clubs do not screen prospective members by education level. You think London's most accomplished academics spend their time looking to join the clubs? Face it: unless you're referring to the faculty lounge at Cambridge as a "club," most clubs will have plenty of half-wits.

There are some sick amounts of Russian mafia/oligarch money running around the globe these days. Russian organized crime generates a lot of money and these dudes are dangerous, especially the Chechens. In my experience, Arabs with money are some of the crassest people I've ever met. Saw an Arab guy grab a white girl by her hair and spit in her face at a club. Of course he proceeded to get the shit pounded out of him by these two dudes who saw this take place while being called Al-Qaeda but I think in this case he got what he deserved. Tokyo, especially some of the nicer parts, are pretty baller. You have Ferraris and Lambos lined up outside of all these clubs but I guess they're not that baller because after all, they let me in. Hong Kong is pretty cool but there's less of the insecure, conspicious displays of wealth that I've seen other places. In New York, you see a lot of kids from New Jersey and Long Island driving their parent's Lexuses and BMWs thinking that they're rolling deep but seriously, they're only fooling themselves and the chubby NJ chick who took the PATH in that night. I drive a serious piece of high performance automotive engineering but I still don't think that I'm a high roller. Just my take. If you have the wealth to enjoy some of the nicer things in life, great, enjoy. But have some human decency, maturity and character to not look down on others without as much wealth. Also, patekphillipe, don't name yourself after an expensive watch and make fun of blacks and hispanics. That just exposes you as a status-seeking, insecure person from a lower-income bracket.

It's just hard realizing that I'll be leaving university, where everyone is at least somewhat intelligent. That's what I'm used to. I apologize if I'm offending people by asking if there are any private clubs that reflect the type of friends that I have now as a student at a good university. That's all I'm looking for. Apparently it doesn't exist--fine, whatever.

Join Mensa then! When was the last time you had an intelligent conversation in a club anyways? Perhaps you should go to a normal pub where there are normal people. You might be surprised, the guy in the corner mightn't have gone to cambridge but could be just as knowledgable. The way you talk shows you lived a sheltered life. Stop being a stuck up fucking bitch.

[quote=fp175]Wow. Answers like the above: "stop being a stuck up fucking bitch" is the reason that this forum is 99% crap and barely provides any useful information.

I always try to give decent advice to good questions. As for nouveau rich wannabes and assorted people with chips on their shoulders, yes I like to flame them. Go read tatler, i'm sure that has got the type of stuff you're looking for.

Dude...you don't even know me or anything about me. Why are you wasting your time trying to paint me out to be some tacky Long Island chick with a Tiffanys necklace driving Daddy's white Lexus? Seriously...do something else with your life. If you don't know the answer to my original question, then don't post.

Ivan:
Why is it really so important for an investment banker to become a member of a "hot London club"? Haven't you guys got other interests apart from partying with young worthless kids whose only "advantage" is an availability of rich relatives?

Agreed. There has been always a degree of immense superficiality lingering around...

Cultured, fascinating people are those who pile in immense hours in books, learning, and artistic endeavors, or acquire fascinating personas through the travels of bitter experience, mostly through suffering of varying levels.

More often than not, these men and women are older professionals or learned people, not a dumb 20 year old Harvard/Stanford/Princeton kid who lacks any ounce of culture except for his knowledge acquired through pre-packaged study.

You certainly won't find interesting people or interesting conversation at dance clubs; heavy consumption of alcohol doesn't mix with these things..

It's just hard realizing that I'll be leaving university, where everyone is at least somewhat intelligent.

Most university kids have potential but are too busy with their courses/studying/internships to experience personal growth. Personally, I never found them particularily interesting when I was at school. I think you're probably scared to look into yourself and realize that you, yourself...is boring...

Los Locos is the shit now. Probably one of the most prestigious and posh member club in London at the moment. Friend of mine is a member and keeps telling me how good it is...

For the record, I'm thinking of joining something like this: http://www.rcsint.org/club/ "In addition, we also offer a public affairs programme on Commonwealth and international issues, with meetings, seminars and events involving a range of prominent UK and international figures. There is also the lighter side - with themed cultural events, wine tastings, music and opera."

So yes, I'd imagine I would meet intelligent, educated people at a place like that. Perhaps I am naive though.

I'm also wondering why I'm getting attacked, when most of the NYC bankers join their Ivy alumni clubs and that's not a big deal. They're the same thing.

Seanc:
You're getting attacked because you sound snooty angling for a membership so you can give head to rich, smelly old British Bastards.

Haha, if that were the case, I'm sure there'd be more than enough old British guys at work!

Seanc, don't be so vulgar, I'm a lady :p

I have to say that I have a membership at Tramps and Mortons in berkley square, which is a fabulous place to entertain friends and clients because the food is good, the lounge has a lovely atmosphere and the drinks are superb. an excellent venue for any pre-club drinking. I have found that as time passes, the appeal of the crass nature of exhibiting wealth that goes in clubs has diminished and I prefer these kind of low-key but interesting venues for a couple of bottles with friends.

I also have to point out that whilst tramps is seen by some to be the most exclusive, it is also relatively less costly than many other clubs in london, particularly those striving for the nouveau riche segment of londons 'multicultural' community. I like 50 St James for a flutter too but as a casino it can get rather seedy at times..

Inferno clapham - haven't even heard of it so I had to google. Really, doesn't look like the place where you can find someone good enough to win my wallet. Would find it very hard to believe that its a good spot for bankers.

Right about abacus though, very handy location for several IBs.

Movida's still popular with people splurging thier bonus trying to swing their dicks, although I personally think it's starting to fade. Regardless, some very nice looking gold-diggers.

Smith's of Smithfield is a cool place to go during or after work. Nice atmosphere, but few ladies.

Paper and Maya are decent clubs. I don't think either takes Movidas place though.

for best views on a summer night, i like founders arms, it's near tate modern, but it can get full of tourists.

for something different, but expensive, you can sit in a jail cell at the bar at the courthouse kempinski hotel. also has an excellent cocktail menu.

porterhouse in covent garden is also pretty good. try the brainblasta beer (it's 6% or 7% i think).

mdr24:
crystal, tramp, bouji's. all you need to know. movida was good two years ago.

true but boujis was good about 5 years ago. It's stuffy, boring and full of public schoolboys who've just hit the drinknig age, all of whom claim to be 3rd cousins with the princes. Although I went once or twice at that age, but as soon as the novelty wears off it gets boring.

Movida sucks ass, it's so over-rated

Roof Gardens does not require membership and is a fantastic night out...my friends go there a lot and none are members :)

Nice bars = The Player / Milk & Honey / Trailer Happiness

Cheapest pub in the world (probably) - The Goose, North End Road SW6 ---> £2.50 (approx) for a double and mixer, best pre-game venue in London

Hi, Nice topic - actually I am considering joining a club, but I am not interested in celeb / fashion places, but rather clubs where I can find like-minded people that share same passion for Finance / in particular buy side - Asset Management, not only IB

so essentially a club that would raise the probability to meet people working in my same sector to expand network in a meaningful way

any suggestion??

On that note, are there any strip clubs in the area?

You know you've been working too hard when you stop dreaming about bottles of champagne and hordes of naked women, and start dreaming about conditional formatting and circular references.

Rooftop bars are a crapshoot - so much demand, little supply.

Most of the places you can eat at are pretty stiff or have very little space set aside for eating. So trying to spontaneously rooftop it is therefore hard, particularly as once you're out of work, all the HR betches and slackers have been filling up the rooftops since 5:30.
