Looking for a job with ~1 year of consulting/work experience
Hello monkeys,
I was recently laid off after a year of working at a top mgmt consulting firm as a junior consultant (industry undergoing upheaval, firm might get acquired, firm restructuring and overhauling staffing needs). I'm wondering if any of you have advice on how to go about the job search, with only a year of full-time work experience under my belt.
- I've reached out to some headhunters but they indicated that opportunities would be limited due to my limited work experience.
- I've tapped into my network, but at this point most of my peers are also one year into their first jobs, and don't have that much pull or information. I've asked former colleagues, who said they'll keep an eye out.
- I've been trying to used LinkedIn and applying on company websites online, but Idk if this is the most efficient way to go about things.
As time drags on, I'm beginning to feel a bit panicky. Any advice would be appreciated.
I was in a similar position about a year ago. It will take time, maybe 3-6 months or more ... maybe less. Looking back on it I made sure to work out, have some time to myself to read, and keep on applying.
In the end what saved was a recruiter who worked closely with me for 9 months (I sensed the firm was going to let me go) by lining up interviews. Everyone's story is different you just have to be persistent and follow up. Good luck and know that this will be a great (not a comfortable one) learning experience. Just know that no one will simply hand you a job.
I am currently in a similar position, was part of this very unique program where I worked in pub fin for six months govt agency and another six month at an investment bank. I've been unemployed since June 2013 and it sucks.
I am currently applying, networking by emailing recuiters, calling, tapping into my network. Going to the gym, biking, reading, watching tv and movies to keep my mind off this unemployment situation.
How long have you been unemployed for?
Karypto how long were you unemployed for before landing a gig?
@TheKid1 - going to be approaching 2 month mark soon and getting worried.
@karypto - what recruiting service did you use?
Thekid and sine (and others)... if you're potentially interested in a full-time temp-to-perm type of situation in NYC, I am looking to fill an analyst-level role. We are a boutique consulting firm focused on commercial strategy for life sciences (i.e., biopharma and their drugs). Big plus if you know anything about the industry, but a requirement is that you're interested in working in the biopharma sector.
If this sounds like something you'd like to pursue, PM me with a little bit more information on your background as well as your resume.
