LSE General Course and Internship
I'm looking at maybe doing the LSE General Course but I'm unsure how it would fit with an internship the following summer. The General Course ends June 29th which is much later than banking internships start. I would still really like to do this but I'd like to get some input on how I could make this happen.
Thanks
Hmm...don't London internships start a bit later than that? I could be wrong. You already know that outside of some very small shops, nobody will wait for you so you really need to decide what you value here.
That being said, tons of general course alums here on the street back home. Most I've seen of any program.
You wont learn jack shit in the GC, So, its on you to figure out whether or not it is worth it to shell out $$$ for that name on ur resume,
Go for the internship.
Thanks for the input. I don't really care about what I'd learn, just having a good experience but I guess it doesn't make too much sense then. I think it would be awesome to be based in Europe for an entire year but I could always do two semester long programs in different places and it would still probably be cheaper than what I'm paying now.
Is the General Course a whole semester? If it is I think that's a good idea... particularly if you're still a sophomore at that time. If it's the last semester before your junior summer than that's tough... I'd be concerned about not being at Cornell during that time (which is a great place to be for SA recruiting in terms of the school, but also location close to the city, etc).
BigRed:
I'm currently in the General Course at LSE and was in your exact situation last year. There are obviously clear positives and negatives to coming here. The name on your resume is second to none around the world as a whole, especially in Europe. People who I talk to on Wall Street are always extremely impressed that I'm at LSE, and I've been able to network with and be mentored by many LSE grads as a result while I worked in NY last summer. You also get a chance to live in London for a year, which is an absolutely amazing city, and the ability to travel around Europe frequently.
The negatives are obviously the potentially late end date of the program and the disadvantage when you interview for US positions. I fortunately just took a returning offer that I had after last summer in NY. All of my friends here are interested in finance, and they are applying to both US and London positions simultaneously. You might be forced to interview over the phone or on Skype for US positions, which is a concern. The bottom line is that you are going to get out what you put into it. If you network your ass off and use every connection you have, then you should be fine.
The end date is pretty ambiguous right now for me, since the exam period begins in early May and doesn't technically end until late June. I've heard a lot of people are finished before May is over, and most are finished by mid-June. If you finish in mid-June then you would probably be missing only orientation and maybe part of the first week.
To give you a little background, I'm working as an SA for a major BB in S&T in NY next summer, and their stance on it is that I just need to keep them updated on my end of exams and that I'll start as soon as I can in the summer. They never said that me being over here for a little longer would hurt my application, and clearly it didn't.
If you have any other questions about it than feel free to PM me.
Thanks for the reply. PM'd for some more information.
Pymp- it is all of junior year which is both good and bad. I think if I could get something at a BB during sophomore summer it wouldn't be as bad if I did well.
Actually the above poster brings up a good point. LSE courses technically end by late June, but for the most part they are finished by April, with exams spread out the rest of the way. I worked full time after April when I was a graduate, so, yeah, you might be able to work something out.
It sounds pretty cool to me... LSE on a resume along with AEM and you'll be in a good spot come recruiting time. As the guy above mentioned, if you network and stay active and everything I'm sure you'll be able to figure out a way to do SA recruiting for NY (as well as London if you're into that). I'd say go for it... aside from all the recruiting considerations, school is about learning and enjoying your youth. I think you'll learn a ton by studying abroad and expanding your horizons internationally. You'll also have a ton of opportunities to travel throughout europe during the year, which is something you shouldn't pass on.
Ithaca vs. London w/ trips to Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Milan, Prague, etc. sprinkled in throughout the year.... that's not really a contest.
Thanks for the additional input Pymp. London and travelling Europe has to be better than anything Ithaca could offer.
