Making the most out of opportunity

Hello All,

I am a long time reader of this board; thanks for sharing the tons of useful info over the years - looking for some input on my current situation...

I am currently in my late twenties, working at a big bank on derivative operations side; a fairly senior role, as far as the operations go... Over the years, my dream was to work as the Equity Research Associate - all my attempts to land the job, even an interview by applying on the corporate websites have failed. Quite discouraging...

I have the academic background, i.e. CFA, FRM, BCom - Finance required for the job, but the lack of experience is bringing my profile to the bottom of the chain.

I finally have reached a point using my network to have my resume put on the desk of the recruiting manager for an ER role.

Now the question is, what should I highlight on my resume to recover from the lack of relevant experience? Some highlights I currently have on my profile:

  • Advanced knowledge of derivatives (equity, IR, FX, credit) and valuation methodologies;
  • Advanced knowledge/experience with Excel/VBA, including building valuation models for derivatives;
  • Communication skills - including leading meetings with management/clients.
  • Unrelated - but obviously the major part of my resume is oriented around project supporting the complete lifecycle of the trades...

Appreciate any feedback!

I feel like you should include the things you feel most relevant to the role/group. Do you have any friends in ER that work in similar sized firms or similar coverage groups? If you've been doing a good job at networking you should have a few folks that you can take your resume right to and they should tell you what will be favorable and what won't be.
