McCombs or Jones

Just got in both UT McCombs and Rice Jones MBA programs. McCombs with no scholarship, rice with full scholarship.

Career goal is consulting in energy industry, maybe investment bank. Don't mind staying in Texas for a couple of years, but want to travel back to California in the future.

Currently hesitating in between these two programs.

Any thoughts any inputs any comments are welcome!

Thanks a lot!

I think a lot of people will tell you hands down go to Texas, but I have friends in both programs currently and have met quite a few people who have gone through both programs in the last 3-4 years and I'll tell you honestly they are viewed on equal footing (basically) by recruiters. If a company has two final candidates for an IB job, the deciding factor is not going to be ....hey this guy went to UT, let's take him. I feel like you might have a little more exposure to consulting type gigs at UT, but I think if you're qualified for post-mba consulting, I'd choose based on which city you 'd rather live in.....or the fact that Rice offered you a 100% scholarship. That is hard to turn down. Personally I'd go to UT just to live in Austin, but I wouldn't get hung up on differences b/w the schools in the eyes of the market, because they're both very competitive in Texas.

Rice's rep is definitely growing, but this is not yet the case. UT still enjoys an edge in recruiting.

That being said, recruiting in general at both schools is getting hurt pretty significantly due to both school's concentration in energy-related post-grad jobs. For that reason, I'd probably go Rice...if the energy market still sucks when you graduate, you'll have little to no debt due to your scholarship. If money isn't an object, go to UT...mainly b/c Austin is an amazing place to live. Hot girls, great nightlife, lakes in the summer, music, etc.

Are you talking MBA or undergrad?

If for undergrad, Rice without a doubt.

MBA - I would say McCombs. The McCombs brand carries farther and has better recognition on the west coast. The Jones MBA program is moving up the rankings but has only been around for a little over a decade, so it doesn't have an established alumni base yet. Going to a school with a broad alumni base will help you a lot in recruiting particularly if you decide to recruit for roles outside of Texas.

All I will say is Austin is one of the coolest cities on earth. If your environment and surroundings has anything to do with it that is. Food: unreal, people: chill, nightlife: awesome, weather: dry heat sunny, economics: great.

Also one of the best PE firms, Vista Equity Partners is HQ in Austin and they have hired several UT grads (undergrads).

Alright alright alright.
