Meet the New Birther Movement

http://nypost.com/2014/05/19/real-cause-for-worry-facts-on-hillarys-con…

While I have no discernible party affiliation or political bent, the hilarity of this article is beyond description. The comparison is drawn between Hilary falling down and bumping her head and NFL players who spend a decade or more getting bulldozed by 300 pound oxen.

I've got no views on Hillary as a candidate. However, if she does get presidency, American history will have a strange period of 1989 - 2019 where the presidency was held between two families, other than Obama.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

Jeb Bush may be running for the GOP ticket.

Moderately amusing considering that USA really prides itself as a model of democracy and meritocracy.

The Karl Roves of the world would be more amusing than sad only if the media didn't cling to their every sensationalist word like semen to a uterus wall.

On another note, I found this conversation extremely interesting... http://teamcoco.com/video/nate-silver-serious-jibber-jabber. People underestimate how intelligent Conan is.

What I found particularly interesting was the notion that our more sophisticated, specialized and spliced flavors of media consumption is one of the driving forces behind the increased divisiveness and partisanship. Whereas previous there were 1 or 2 news outlets that had a fairly limited political agenda, now there are 15 different flavors ranging from the Daily Show to Fox News. The viewers of these shows themselves have a selection bias and as a result they only hear the points of that affirm their opinions/beliefs/values. The whole thing is pretty interesting, but particularly the part about "no one is speaking to America" anymore... minutes 3 through 8.

Well, come on now. The Daily Show is not news and I don't think they even pretend to be. They do have an agenda, but I wouldn't consider it a news outlet.

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for freedom of thought which they seldom use.

I may be drawing a bit of a long bow, but I think the way Wall Street banks recruit from target universities - particularly team leaders recruiting heavily from their alma mater - also tends to build up echo chambers of similar perspectives and background.

Some people seem to use it as their main source of news on current affairs, regardless of whether the creators intend anyone to do that. Certainly many treat it as a source of opinions/how they interpret the news.

Jon Stewart (and Colbert) try to have it both ways, and people let them get away with it. They hide behind "Oh, I'm just a comedy show" when they get called out for it.

Interesting comments re: the divisiveness of current news, but I can't think of any era where it was that great. Heck, it was probably worse in the 18th and 19th centuries.

So age and illness are fair game with Bob dole and McCain, but questioning Hillary is verboten? Yeah, seems right.

my thoughts exactly.

And so it goes

So the issue you have is that you don't think the comparison is relevant? The author of the post is an MD and has probably studied or treated more "terrible concussions" from football players than 66 year old women who fall down. The football players are typically in good physical shape and wear helmets, and Hillary wasnt' wearing a helmet when she hit her head on the floor, so it's not that crazy of a comparison. She had a blood clot in her head presumably as a result of the fall. Bill Clinton said her injury was a "terrible concussion" and the doctor said that if she had TBI, one of the side effects is cognitive problems like thinking, memory, and reasoning. The concern about Hillary's cognitive abilities after the fall was likely mentioned to her by the treating physicians but since Karl Rove said it publicly, he's crazy? I don't see the hilarity. Also, I fail to see how a documented publically acknowledged head injury that could cause cognitive issues for a presidential candidate is akin to the "birther movement." I do agree that viewers of news largely have selection bias.

I don't think that anyone is arguing that the health or country of birth of a Presidential aspirant (is that a word?) isn't a valid concern. There is a very basic and mechanical process to vet that.

The bigger concern is the characters in US politics system that have developed a system for sabotaging the political discourse and willingness/stupidity to buy into it. Rather than focusing on vital issues that should sway voters they instead concoct these ridiculous distractions for your average uninformed viewer/reader to busy themselves.

Also on the one hand you defer medical judgement (for which common sense is adequate) to the "MD" that wrote the article and in the next breath your relying on Slick Willy's expertise in deeming Hillary's concussion a "terrible one."

The esteemed physician whose expertise you so blindly buy into is a fuckin eye doctor... so I think he's studied about as many concussions as my mail man. And not Bruce my regular mailman either, but the dude that part-times one Saturday a month and always puts my neighbor's West Elm catalogs in my mailbox. What the fuck man, thats not my apartment number!

B-Po - you're obviously a moron for putting two and two together. How dare you question this or listen to a doctor. The fact that Rove brought it up means it is tin foil, republican birther bullshit.

My dad's an MD. Doesn't stop him saying some stupid shit some times.

That said, he's never been as dumb as this MD to offer a tentative diagnosis in the media of someone who he has never examined.

Hillary will be near the outer bounds of age when she runs. She also has every reason to cover up or minimize any serious illness. I don't see how questioning the validity of this "fall" is anything other than being prudent.

She was in the hospital for a month and had blood clots that required treatment. Strokes happen when you have blood clots. Not sure why Rove bringing this up is somehow uncalled for or tin foil.

TNA:
She was in the hospital for a month
The official diagnosis was a blood clot. Rove told the conference near LA Thursday, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Rove repeated the claim a number of times to the audience. Clinton’s rep said, “Please assure Dr. Rove she’s 100 percent.” Despite Rove’s claims, then-Secretary of State Clinton was discharged from New York Presbyterian Hospital after spending three days undergoing treatment for a potentially life-threatening blood clot.

Sarah Palin faced questions and innuendos about the circumstances of her son Trig, who was born with Downs Syndrome, but Hillary's head injury is off limits? Even her husband said it took her 6 months to recover. It's a fair subject if she runs for President.

The mean IQ on all sides of politics seems to fall by 2 standard deviations in the US whenever stuff like this comes up.
