M&I Article: Equity Research -- A Day in the Life, Pay, & Exit Opps
Hi All,
This morning, Mergers & Inquisitions published Part II of their two-hour interview with me. It is entitled "Equity Research: A Day in the Life, Pay, and Exit Opportunities – Got Hedge Funds?" You can see it here:
Many of you have questions about what it's really like to work in equity research (both the pro's and con's), how people are compensated, and where they go afterward, and this article addresses those very questions. If you're serious about getting into research, I recommend perusing this article.
You can find a link to Part I of the interview here:

This was awesome. It pretty
This was awesome. It pretty much described exactly how the sell side guys I talk to daily talk about the job. And it's super similar to the buy side, except the hours on the buy side are slightly less and the pay is slightly more from what I understand.
Good work, I've been waiting
Good work, I've been waiting for part 2.

You're welcome guys - happy to help and glad to hear you enjoy the article.
FYI, I have gotten a number of inquiries already regarding this article (as well as Part I). To be clear, I worked in equity research for several years, but am now in business school and am interning at a hedge fund. So, while I no longer work in equity research at this very moment, I do keep a pulse on the market because I still have a number of contacts and former colleagues in equity research. It's also because I no longer work in equity research that I can comment on what the realistic exit opportunities are.
Awesome, thanks numi.
Awesome, thanks numi. Hopefully we'll see more from ya!

stocktwo50 - As for business school admissions (I'm at a top tier), I wouldn't be too concerned about what area of front office finance you're in. It's more about telling a compelling story about how your past experiences have positioned you best for future ones, and how business school is going to help facilitate that. The key is just to be thoughtful about describing your aspirations and leadership. I know that sounds generic, but if you're coming from a research background and are looking for specific guidance about how to spin it into business school admissions, I'd be happy to chat.
whatwhatwhat - I don't have a website, but do drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'd be happy to discuss in greater detail.

From my experience at a BB sell side research, lead analysts do most of the traveling while associates hold down the fort.

Yeah I went to a few investor conferences, company visits, etc, but after you experience it once or twice you kind of don't go again unless you really want to for some reason, so yeah the key phrase is "if you really want to". It's not that fun really lol.
