Mid-Sized Hedge Fund Compensation (Non-target->MM IB->Mid-sized HF)

Hi All,

Long-time lurker here. I've been looking around for some hedge fund compensation data but it looks like alot of threads are a bit dated (last one I've seen is in 2013). recently landed an offer from a $1B-$2B top performing hedge fund (which was a long and arduous process might I add). Many thanks to the wonderful advice I've gotten from WSO.

Seeing as hedge fund compensation is largely variable, I was wondering if anyone had an insight on what a mid-sized fund would pay for a first year. For reference I'm currently looking at ~$200k all in. 3rd year comp at my bank this year was ~$180k for analysts. Thanks!

I know this isn't the answer that you want, but it really does vary significantly by fund. I've been in the industry for almost 1.5 years and have been asking friends what they've received / heard of and no one has a consensus answer. I would be more focused on the base...can you maintain a good lifestyle and potentially save a little? 200mm is very respectable especially in this market. That is in line with what I've received and I work at a smaller fund. However, the upside comes in good years (think 2013) when pay is significantly skewed. At a PE firm, you might get 150, 200, 250 etc as you progress up the ranks, but at a hedge fund you might get 100, 0, 0, 2.5mm. How do you describe that to someone asking for pay? Sure it's more standard at the junior level but that's not why we enter the field. Focus on learning and if you like the people you will genuinely enjoy going to work everyday unlike the majority of our PE peers (sorry for dissing PE...only half joking :) ). Good luck and take the offer is my advice

Should it be expected to get as much as we would in banking, at the very minimum? OP was the structure 100 base + 100% bonus?

Not OP but yes 100% base is considered as standard avg bonus expectation imo
