MLK Day - How far have we really come in 50+ years?
It's ignorant to argue that racism in America is dead, but how far exactly do you think we have come? And more importantly, how long until we reach equality? Or even more importantly, will we ever reach true equality?
Sure, every man is now equal on paper, but the everyday social oppression and injustices are still evident in today's society (police brutality, Oscars [dont agree with the argument but whatever], income inequality). But it goes both ways. African-Americans have BET, rap music constantly calling themselves the n word, and other groups that alienate themselves from the 'dominant' white culture. Not saying I personally think any of this is right or wrong, but it doesn't seem 'equal' in the literal sense of the word.
How far do you think we have come since MLK delivered his famous speech and how do you view the future with regards to racial equality?
Racism and prejudice will never be eliminated. Human beings are tribal at their very core. Even if mankind evolves over time into a more homogenous shade there will still be prejudice based on other factors, such as lightness/darkness of skin, or other features, such as height, weight, nose shape, or other subtle features.
Africa provides a great observation. Racism/prejudice based on immutable things in Africa is as prevalent as it is in any other culture. Look at the Tutsi and Hutu in Rwanda. We--outsiders--can barely tell the difference between the Tutsi and Hutu with the naked eye, but Rwandans largely can. Tribal prejudices are cemented into them from an early age.
Objectively, the black population has progressed in some areas and regressed in other areas since 1965. If things keep going along as they are now I don't think there is much hope for it to be materially better for the black population in 2065. America's black population at large is dedicated to the proposition that they are a victim, and they are addicted to the government welfare state. Even more, they are addicted to the sweet verbal honey that white liberals use to keep black people on the proverbial plantation. And subhumans like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are the white liberals' uncle Toms, doing the bidding of white liberals to ensure that the black population remains impoverished and dependent upon government as much as is possible. So long as the American black population continues to embrace these subhumans as their leaders, as well as the corrupt and vile politicians that blotch the landscape of urban centers, the economic and social progress of the black community will be severely retarded.
The black population has sowed the seeds of dependency, and it has reaped its harvest--poverty, crime, murder, and destroyed futures for their children. Black leadership in America is desperately immoral, and I'd even argue sociopathic. The black community ought to collectively be ashamed of itself.
There's definitely still good ol' boy's clubs, but it is incomparably better now. Separate drinking fountains still existed then......seriously try to even imagine that now. Most of you couldn't. Interracial marriage is so much more accepted now, it's hard to imagine. We have a black President! That was unthinkable in the 1960's. A black quarterback was almost unimaginable back then. There is no question we've come a long way from that time.
It's still not perfect, obviously. All you have to do is read WSO for a little while to figure that out. And, of course, this amongst the more highly educated of our population, it usually gets considerably worse the lower downstream you venture.
I had MLK off. Word.
