MM FT vs EB SA (both London)

I have a choice between a FT at a MM firm that performs well in the industry group I’ve been placed in and an SA at one of the elite boutiques (group unknown).

I am personally not too keen on the industry group I’ve been placed in at the MM and I therefore would likely look to move laterally to another bank after a short stint as an analyst, but on the plus side the team is very easy to work with.

On the other hand, if I were to take the SA offer and was asked to return the following year, I would have an extra year before I would start and from what I can tell, the expectation is that you spend that year doing a masters; something I don’t want to do (due to lack of interest and financial constraints). Of course there is the possibility I could be asked to join sooner which would avoid this problem, but also the chance that I do not receive a return offer at all in which case I will have graduated with no job offer lined up.

What would you do in this situation?

Thanks.

EB SA

maybe you can start working earlier (after the SA stint), why wait next year? you can ask/try at least anyway, you will get paid on analyst basis and will have a better brand on your resume and maybe open more opportunities

i would not join that MM FT if you are looking to lateral after 1y anyway

good luck

I guess the reason he had an SA offer on the table or even joining the SA recruiting process in the first place is that he told the EB people he would either delay graduation or go for a Master's. Otherwise I don't think they let seniors interview for SA position.

To your questions OP, how different in terms of prestige, exit opps, culture are we talking about here?

Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

This is exactly right.

In terms of differences, the MM is a firm which is a top BB in its home country, but has a somewhat weaker but growing presence in London. The EB is one of EVR, LAZ etc.

I'm not really comfortable going into any more detail on a forum (could i perhaps PM you?) for obvious reasons.

Also what would I do if i didn't receive a return offer? It's this risk that's offsetting the EB's benefits for me.

Tough choices here.

If delaying graduation is indeed an option on the table, then go with the EB. If you receive a return offer, take some fun and laid back classes and enjoy your last year. If somehow you didn't receive a return offer, leveraging the EB name and the network you built during the internship should open doors during the next FT recruiting cycle.

If going for a Master's is a must on the EB route, but financial constrains are tight, and you are not keen on your summer performance earning you a return offer, go with the MM and keep in touch with the EB team for lateral opportunities.

Any chance you can let the EB know that you decided to change your plan about getting a master's and wanted to start working right away and have an exploding offer to join a reputable MM? It's quite a risky move, so it depends on how well you clicked with the EB team.

Feel free to PM me.

not right. every bb, eb, mm etc. (in europe at least) allows seniors and also recent grads to do internships go get informed before posting bs

The internship you are referring to is likely to be a winter/spring internship or an off-cycle 6-month internship that leads to FT employment right away. It's not a summer internship that asks you to come back AFTER 1 year.
