Morgan Stanley Bank Resource Management
Does anyone have any information about the BRM department at Morgan Stanley. From what I understand it is kind of like prime brokerage, but I don't really have a clear picture of what they do. Do summer analysts in BRM move on to a sales or trading desk if they get a full time offer? Also does anyone have information about the hours?
MS Bank Resource Management Division
User @APAE" explained the group's structure and mission:
BRM is a combination of Fixed Income, Equities, and the Prime Brokerage businesses and essentially synthesizes counterparty risk in all brokerage activities. It has a lot to do with securities lending on the equity side as well as repo/reverse repos. It's essentially lending and borrowing securities to help the largest institutional investors execute their investment strategies while more accurately managing exposure to each firm.
Our users share that this is considered to be a Front Office role.
It's definitely a front-office role that has been taken from parts of Sales & Trading's Equity and Fixed Income division. The three main areas of business include: Securities Lending, REPOs, and Counterparty portfolio management (CVA)
MS BRM Internship Program
If you intern with the firm you will rotate through different groups within the division. If you return full time, you will be placed into one of these groups.
Morgan Stanley describes the internship in the post below.

Is this FO/MO/BO?
Front office.
Really? Because from what I have learned of it so far, it seems easier to get into. They recruit at non-targets, and the recruitment deadlines are late, and the GPA requirement is 3.0, compared to 3.5 for Ops and Finance.
Contrary evidence.

Here's an idea: why don't you first get the offer and then comment on the ease of acceptance? Has anyone interviewed first round for this position?

Bumping every single fucking thread about MS BRM makes no one want to help you
Any updates on this? Also found this department interesting, would like to know from anyone who's had experience there or in a similar what it is like? And for those who interviewed for this group whats it like? Thanks in advance for replies.
Help- MS Bank Resource Management? (Originally Posted: 01/15/2011)
Alright, so Morgan Stanley is coming to my school (non-target) to interview for a SA position as in Bank Resource Management.
The description on the site under the position says...
"The ten-week Bank Resource Management (BRM) Summer Analyst Program provides an opportunity to experience the culture and atmosphere of Morgan Stanley while learning about one of the fastest growing areas of the business. You will obtain hands-on experience as we facilitate borrows and loans to our hedge fund clients. Summer Analysts joining Bank Resource Management will participate in a ten-week program alongside Sales & Trading Summer Analysts."
"Responsibilities will vary depending on your rotation through our various desks:
Domestic and International Equity Trading: Borrow securities from the world's largest lending institutions and assist in lending functions to our hedge fund clients. Fixed Income: Learn how Morgan Stanley uses repo products to finance the firm. Sales and Marketing: Evaluate client portfolios and perform analysis on business opportunities. Risk Management: Assist in determining exposure to our various counterparties."
Can anyone help me better understand the responsibilities of this position and maybe how well of a SA position it is?
Thanks
Fixed Income is in Sales & Trading, that's front office. No clue about Sales and Marketing, and Risk Management is middle office(?). It's rotational, so you won't get as much in-depth exposure to any single one of the things you rotate through.
Sounds very much like prime brokerage...i wouldnt call this MO..if you run a large matchbook on securities lending you can generate revenue...its not traditional FO though.
From what I hear, its just a distinction created within Morgan Stanley's Sales & Trading divisions to determine the credit exposure and cash within the firm. The pay, at least within the fixed income groups, is also up to par with other Sales & Trading groups.
BUMP, Any info on the interview (first round)

Hey. Still not sure what I am doing this summer. Does anyone know anything about ms bank resource management? Is it middle office? thanks
back office bro...you manage the firm's resources e.g. restocking the coffee machines and clearing paper jams etc. (hence the resource management)
Front office (alongside the rest of their sales & trading internship)
stirman's right. It's under S&T on their university programs page. Apparently they do stuff with HFs...
Morgan Stanley basically created this new division from their Equities and Fixed Income parts to create a better client interaction on the Securities Lending (Equities) and repo Trading/CPM (Fixed Income) side to the buy side traders.
What exactly is BRM? And what can a 1st year analyst expect to make, Base and Bonus? Curious, sounds a lot like prime brokerage but clearly is a separate front office group.
Anyone know anything about the first round interview?

Curious if any of you have intern or work experience in this group. I've read the basic literature on the division and searched posts, and wondering how it compares to the traditional S&T desks.
how is this different from prime brokerage / prime services?
Had my phone interview. Doesn't seem different at all. Wondering what the comp is like for those in securities lending / repo trading roles though.
What were the questions like?? x
What was this interview process like? Similar to S&T?
