Morgan Stanley ECM/DCM to IBD?
Hi guys,
So i'm a fairly active poster here and made a new account just to get some privacy. Wanted your advice on this.
I'm interning at MS within their Global Capital Markets Group in a structured products desk. It's a long internship and I'm doing fairly well - It is complex and interesting, however, I would like something more corporate finance related. I know people at MS who interned (summer) in DCM/ECM roles ended up getting offers from IBD and vice versa. Given this information, if anyone has experience or knowledge regarding this, any suggestions on how to orchestrate an offer from IBD instead of ECM/DCM? Any advice would be great.
Hey! Sorry I can't help you, but was hoping to get some insight on MS's Corporate Equity Derivatives team in London .. I might be in teh same situation as you in a couple of months, as I'm more interested in M&A but have been offered an internship within that team and I definetly think it will be a great experience, but if I find out it's not my thing, would also be interested in the answer to your question .. so do you know what do they do exactly? have you had any feedback about that group?? Thanks, and hope you find a way to go to IBD man!

Start networking with people in IBD/the groups you would like to meet with over there. Start grabbing coffee with them, discussing with them what they like about their job/your interest in lateraling to their division. Also reach out to older alumni you may have in IBD at other banks and ask for their advice on how to handle the situation. These are just my opinions granted.
Thanks. Was thinking of networking around but not sure how that would reflect on me if word gets around and I'm not super cautious.
@maxx - Sorry, Can't help you much as I'm not too familiar with them.
Thank you @"zulumonster", wish you all the best and hope you can go to IBD soon ;)

Thanks Maxx.
If anyone has any suggestion on how they've networked with people from other groups in the same bank without being 'that guy', that would be great as well! :D
If anyone could have any other suggestions - that'd be great! Thx
Subtly network. Don't outright start shitting on DCM to the people who work there. Do well, reach out to some people in IBD and when you're asked about how you like it, spin it so you sound like you love DCM, but think banking is a better fit.
Also, go into it with an open mind. You just might like it.
@TNA - Thanks a lot. Definitely liking it a lot right now. Technical work, great fit and everything. Lacking is corporate finance and the understanding of the broader picture (and perhaps industries) which I feel more interested in. Any suggestions on how to subtly imply that I'd be interested in moving to their group (connecting with some senior alumni in IBD)? So yeah, I'll definitely do that. Thanks again! :D
