Moving Compensation

Tried searching around - couldn't find anything so sorry if this has already been discussed.

I received an offer from a PA middle-market shop. The compensation and everything is above market so I'm very happy with that.

They are giving me $7,500 moving compensation less taxes for relocation. It's not allowance, I get the whole amount regardless so its kind of a signing bonus...

Do you think it is reasonable to push back for $10k or $12K? It will be myself and my wife moving (Wasn't married when I interviewed so I don't think they know I have another person I'm moving with).

I'm just worried moving two people to San Fran, getting an apartment and everything else will be costly and it would be good to have a little more flexible budget.

Any thoughts?

No harm in trying. My firm doesn't pay relocation but I nagged them enough to give me 5k. I would just bring up the fact that you have a new factor in the move - your family - and want to make sure your move is smooth/painless so you can hit the ground running on day one.

Holy cow, I thought this would be easy given the amount amount after taxes on the 7500. If you rent a truck and do the move yourself, it'll cost ~2k just for the truck rental because they have to charge you for like 16 days because of "safety" even if you drove across the country in 3 days. Hotels you could get away with for a few hundred dollars and food and gas would make the trip an extra 1k so you're looking at 3k right off the bat. Depending on where you're moving to, your deposit would probably eat up the rest. But, at least you wouldn't have to pay for all of that up front which is a good cushion for your savings account.
