Interning with BB in MO role but want to do IBD

Accepted offer to intern at top BB (GS) in MO role over small boutique for summer. The idea was that with some very hard work and strong networking I might be able to land an interview as a lateral hire for full-time analyst recruiting in fall (at least was told this was POSSIBLE by HCM director). Coming from a non-target I feel this is my best chance to do IBD with GS specifically, but would be willing to leave firm if I can't get a shot at IBD, and am committed to doing that somewhere. Anyone have some advice on how/what to do if anything?

Network aggressively and be very good at what you do. Be careful with this internal mobility stuff though, because if your direct boss this summer is not supportive of you pursuing a switch to IBD, then you will not switch. No exceptions.

I have a couple decent connections who I have been in contact with at a regional GS office with IBD, would they be able to provide any more leeway than a MO supervisor within their group? (would their opinion matter more so than my supervisor in respect to me moving into that office).

No - your supervisor saying yes is the basic pre-req. Fundamentally it's because your supervisor determines your performance, and there's no way IBD will take you if your performance in MO is anything but exceptional.

Most supervisors will be willing to have you explore other options within the firm, but it's largely luck. If you end up with somebody who isn't open to that sort of thing, you're stuck in MO at least until FT recruiting.
