Moving from West Coast Banking to NYC Banking
Hey guys,
I just accepted an offer at a MM firm based on LA/SF. The work and group seems to be pretty good but I would like to make the switch to NYC to work on bigger deals at a BB/EB/Top MM Bank. I wanted to get some advice on if anyone has done this before and the difficulty of doing so, and what the best way to go about this is.
I'd be working on pretty relevant deals/the skill set would be the same although networking would obviously be a bit more difficult. Would really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!
Just out of curiosity, what makes you want to move to NYC when you could lateral to the West Coast branch of a BB/EB/Top MM? There are lots of people on the east coast, myself included, who would kill to work in LA...

Wouldn't you feel like your options are limited in LA in terms of lateralling (and upward mobility) just because the market is so small?
By upward mobility are you referring to PE exits? I don't know much about PE on the west coast but I would be interested in learning more about it from someone on here
Trying to switch before you even started hahahaah I respect the hustle, but maybe give the west coast a chance, all I know is the weather is much better out there than here.
Your lifestyle will be far worse in NY and you'll get paid the same. Closer to family i can understand, but at the end of the day the experience you'll get working on MM deals in LA is not going to be drastically different than the ones you'd see in NY.
Give the west coach a chance.
I am from NYC and was placed in SF. Haven't looked back since. Housing is expensive, but it's so worth it.
please go to the east coast, there is to much traffic out west
Chill. I know, you've spent the last 4 years looking into the future...relax and try to enjoy the ride. Be confident you can work out the details in the future.

How do you know if you are going to like something if you don't try it. At least get a year of work experience under your belt before you try jumping ship.
Similar boat as OP and it would be great if others with experience wouldn't mind weighing in. Understand it could be a grass is greener sort of thing as well.
General question.. Isn't there a lot of PE and VC opportunities in LA/SF? SilverLake Partners comes to mind immediately?
Silverlake, Golden Gate Capital, Vista, Platinum, Ares, Leonard Green, Marlin, Clearlake, Gores, Genstar, Aurora, Francisco Partners, Brentwood Associates ... the list goes on. These are just PE, and just HQ'ed in LA/SF, not to mention all of the other firms which have large offices there (TPG, FFL, etc.)

the only people i've seen make that kind of move are people who already had buyside experience or transfer offices with their current firm. i don't know why anyone in their right mind would want to move from Cali to NY though.

not sure what magically insightful answer you're looking for with this question - it's exactly what you think it is. if you're in a competitive position that lends itself to lots of optionality (GS TMT SF, Moelis LA, MS Tech Menlo, etc.) you can just mention to the headhunters that you're interested in East Coast and you'll get good interview opps. will be harder (but definitely not impossible) from mid/lower tier shops/groups as most west coast shops feed into west coast PE/HF/VC
Let me clarify. I'm not asking whether I can get interviews with east coast shops. I'm asking, given that you would need to fly out to NY to interview, how do you deal with the logistics obstacle and its various implications? I guess only people who have done it in the past on this board would know.
Also probably exactly what you think it is. Don't know about west to east, but imagine the situation is similar for east to west (which several analysts did when i was an analyst). Most firms will let you know at least a week in advance of the on-site interview and will pay for your flight to the other end of the coast. They'll put you up in a hotel the night before for the superday. The issue of getting out of work is something you'll have to deal with on your own, most people make up some BS excuse like family in town, feeling sick, family wedding, etc.
