Exit opportunities after research division (not ER) at a bank
Hi guys,
First, sorry that it doesn't necessarily fit ER, however, I didn't know which forum would be most appropriate.
I am studying BSc Economics and am interested in economic research, but have no aspirations of going into academia. Now I am thinking about interning at a research division (not ER) in a BB. What would be the exit opportunities assuming I would work there. Will working at a research department in a BB provide me with a stronger Profile for FT IB recruiting?
Also, what is the salary in such a division, as it is not necessarily revenue-generating as ER is?
Thank you in advance!
you must google first before asking
is this what you are looking for?

the ease of transition from the private to the public sector will depend upon the culture in your country, either way government salaries generally tend to be lower than those in the private sector
also the extent to which the top tier banks in your country will have a global research division/position will depend upon how well developed your country is, so only people in your country can give you relevant advice
Thank you for your input. Of course I googled it, but I would like to hear more about first hand experience rather than some dodgy facts from Glassdoor ... I was thinking about BB's in Germany, so I assume they have research divisions. So when ending up in a research division, will you be stuck there or are the exit opportunites diverse?
not in Germany so I cannot say how restricted/diverse the exit opportunities are, just check the career path of people in Germany in research roles that you are aiming for, as a general rule it will depend upon your networking skills, being a native German and going over there to study/work also makes a difference due to work visas and other red-tape issues regarding work-status of students/employees going for full-time work, if you are German then try your alumni (assuming you are studying in Germany), ask them
Are there any other thoughts from people who have worked/interned at an economic research division of a bank?
Advice on BB macro research exit opps (Originally Posted: 12/15/2017)
Hey guys,
So i've searched through the forums and i've managed to find bits of information sprawled across. However, nothing too concrete has come up. So I've just started a position at a BB in their macro research division and i'm really enjoying the work. However i'm just wondering what sort of exit opps are generally common in this field? I understand that global macro funds are an option, but I know next to nothing about this, so i'm someone would be able to provide some information with regards to this?
Cheers, Brightcake
Hey Brightcake, I'm here to break the silence...any of these links help you?:

Research Analyst - Exit opps? (Originally Posted: 06/24/2007)
Would it be difficult to go into i-banking from a research analyst position @ a fund of funds? I know they're on completely opposite sides of the buy/sell spectrum, but just curious...
If not, what kind of exit opportunities are there, and what would be the natural progression of a career that started out in that position? TIA
the "difficulty" that people perceive in switching among basic roles within finance is probably the biggest obstacle to making a switch.
Moving to AM after 3 years in research (Originally Posted: 03/19/2015)
What are the chances of getting an AM job after 3 years as a research analyst for a big consulting firm?
Depends on what role in AM. Presumably equity research?
I would like to target a role in the career path of portfolio manager, but I understand no one is getting straight into that.. So I guess a similar sort of analyst role where I give recommendations to the portfolio manager.. if I understand the career path there correctly.... I've been doing research of the investment banking industry for 3 years.. to look at their strategy etc to support consultants... So there can be any kind of topic from cost of funding, balance sheet analysis, profitability ratios, etc. to stuff like marketing or industry regulation
What's research in consulting like? What do you do?
In my other answer above I talk about more or less the kind of research I do, although there are other topics I cover but that's the main stuff.. It can teach you a lot straight out of college but after a while there is not that much more to be done... work life balance is up to you most of the time, although there is a lot of pressure to work long hours and the comp does not really make up for that... but if you push you can get a good work life balance, it's just you do need to work for it
